SMIM Blew out!!!

So my buddy has a 94 Eclipse that had a 1G SMIM on it. He bought it that way and some how it has blown apart. We are not sure what brand it is but it looks exactly like the 1G JMF Race manifold shown here: 1G JMF SMIM but it does not have the etched name on top.

The welds aren't what blew out though... the blow out happened outside of the welds around the runners only. My camera is dead so I'm looking for some batteries to take a picture of it. I called a metal/welding shop in town to ask what they thought about it and they basicly said to bring it in and if they can fix it they will. We're having a hard time finding out who made it though. This is a total shock of how it blew out. (I'll add pics in just a bit)
 
What boost were you running? More likely there was some sort of backfire that blew it though, but if it's just a knockoff which it seems to be, it prob wasn't that well done to begin with.

That well done to begin with hmm? How much more well done is metal, welded, when the weld didnt break, the metal split outside of the weld? Anyway I took it to a few machine shops and they all said to take it to this one specific place in town so I did. The guy said he'll have it fixed up in a few days for about $60 - $100 so not too bad I guess. He said the most time consuming part was having to clean up the metal before he could weld it back up. I didnt get a chance to take a pic before I took it up there but I assure you it was welded very well. I found out that the manifold would hold up to 28 lbs all day and that the blow out was caused by a backfire when nitrous was hit. The machine shop guy told me that the manifold looked strong and that it must have had one hell of a nitrous backfire and I just chuckled since my buddy told me it had before the shop guy said it.

SMIM's seem to crack all the time i'm not sure if it's that they are using very thin sheet metal or what, but it's nogt uncommon. One thing to point out is that NOS is a company's acronym, it stands for "nitrous oxide systems" nitrous's abreviation is N2o (derived friom it's molecular breakdown of nitrogen 2, oxygen 1. for the number of molecules that are in it) It seems funny to me that the term is used so much in th eimpoirt world and most kits these days that are run by imports aren't even made by N.O.S., kind of ironic i guess *shrugs*.

The reason he said he'd have to clean it up real well is that aluminum is porus as hell especially if it's in a cast part, plus aluminum oxidized immediately and aluminum oxide is one of the toughest oxides there is..ever heard of aluminum oxide sandpaper? It's just corrosion from aluminum used as the "grit" and you see how well that cuts. PLus, Aluminum oxide has a melting point WAY above that of aluminum, so if you dont' get it all cleaned off right before you weld, it's easy to melt holes in the aluminum before you can burn through the oxide and start blending the filler metal into the metal on th epart you're working on
