The car is having trouble idling, and staying alive when I start it. It has an idle surge, when I start it, then just dies unless I give it some gas, then every once in a while it stays alive and idle surges around 600-1500, (Fuel Cut). Once I rev it and let go of the gas it usually just kills itself, but not all the time. Vacuum is around 10-12 if it idles right, I looked and did a pressure test for leaks, I fixed what leaks there were. Tested the ISC with the Mitsubishi test tool they use, it was ok. BISS screw and TPS tested ok. The car runs very rich too. New spark plugs were just added. There is a code 12 now. I have a VPC, so I don’t know if that’s normal.

I have no idea what it could be, please help with any advice.
(Just rebuild the motor too, not 1 mile, just run time)

Thanks ~Joe

is the vpc tuned correctly? whats the code mean? is the vpc installed correctly? i also had idel issues my isc unit was bad i replaced it and it was fine. stock intake manifold? you could try taking the thottle body off and clean it really well somtimes that will cause problems as well

code 12 -Volume air flow sensor

Stock Intake Manifold

I don't think its tuned, all the knobs are in the 12o'clock position, from what i remember, the last guy who owned it from me had it installed by AMS out here in Chicago. I tested the ISC and it was fine. Ill try cleaning the TP out but the thing is really clean already.

Thank-Joe

ok well if that code is for the air flow meter somthing is wrong with the vpc correct me if im wrong but the stock mass air sensor comes out when this is installed correct? maybe you have a bad air temp sensor what other sensors are added with the vpc?

Yeah the VPC i think takes place of the MAF, the only thing that I know is hooked up to the VPC is the Air Temp sensor, but it doesn't look like the stock sensor, if i need to replace it.

somthing is up with the vpc so your going to have to ask around with it im not totally sure on its setup because i havent used one before do you have a gcc with it? if not i would say get one the gcc gives you more rpm points to and or take away fuel for a better tune

at this point i really wish i did, im going to look around for one, cause at this point i dont know what to do, thanks for the thought

i have a stock 1g maf if you need one. i'm in Naperville, IL. I had a stutter problem and i thought it was the MAF so i replaced it but it still stutters so i have an extra one now. let me know if you wanna work something out.

PM you. I will defendant try that to see if its the VPC setup. I really hope at this point its not. Thanks for the help

i have a stock maf as well but i asked a friend who uses the vpc and he said theres an air temp sensor and a map sensor check the map sensor

Ive checked both sensors, im thinking it might be something to do with the connection to the ECU. The things is the CEL turned on recently so it makes no sense that it didn't throw the code when I first started the engine a couple of times.

Having had personal experience(s) with the HK$ line of piggy-backs, including the VPC, GCC, FCON, FCD, & IPM all installed in the same DSM, I can tell you that you SHOULD get used to the CELs... IMO together they made up a very tedious, cobbled-together series of piggy-back computers... With all of them holding hands, something was bound to go wrong.

I would routinely get CELs I'de say on average of 1-2 times a week and the culprit was usually #12. It got to the point that I'd just go pull and replace the BATT fuse under the hood about every other time I drove the car. -To hell with stores fuel trims or anything like that, but that was befroe I knew any better. -The GF just LOVED that :tease:

After checking, re-checking, and checking again all connections, replacing every in-line butt connector & molex plug with solder & shrink tube, I never was able to eliminate the pesky CELs from cropping up... Ultimately, I ended up going with a different setup (at the time I went with an EPROM ECU, custom EPROM flash, and an AFC for fine tuning with almost zero problems).

Bottom line, be prepared to deal with the CELs and/or plan on a different method of engine fuel management... From my personal experience, the only 'vintage' HK$ Electronic product that I still use is the IPM. -It's the ONLY HK$ unit that doesn't cause the ECU to freak out and through CELs.

Try replacing the VPC with a 1G MAF and go from there... $10 bux says that your frequent CELs will stop after removing the VPC entirely.

Good Luck
(Sorry about my rant, but you managed to resurrect some of my ill-feelings towards 'vintage' HK$ products)

Thanks Boosted I had a feeling the CEL would be common with all the crap I have. I notice when i change any of the setting on the VPC, i dont notice anything happening, idk if I should or shouldn't. Im really new to any of the after market toys.

I read everything I could about the VPC.

Thanks Again

^^^ No prob...

Actually, I think I still might have some of my old VPC, GCC, FCD, :tease: W.T.F. manuals stored away somewhere... If you want 'em, PM me an email address and I'll send over anything that I think would be helpful.
-Honestly though, I'd just plan on going with either a DSMLink or DSMap setup if you have plans for big numbers down the road. -Either way will be money WELL spent.

Either choice, you really need a logger just to be able to 'see' what you are doing in any case... I'd recommend making that a priority.
