Well this morning when i turned my car on, my "check engine light" was on. It was not on when i put the car away last night. Well right after i noticed that light, i noticed that the stock boost guage was NOT working. But my aftermarket boost guage was and it was showing that i was boosting...

Well after some further investigation, i noticed that when i would accelerate, the guage (Aftermarket) would pause at 0psi for a second then continue on its way up. Its noticable when driving to. I can feel the pause. Also, when i let off i can hear like 1-3 small quiet popping noises. Is that just by BOV making the noise or what? I never noticed before..

Some one please help me.

I was boosting 15.. I just dont like how it pauses at 0psi.. And how my check engine light is on. I think it has to do with the turbo, cus the stock boost guage shows nothing. its just sitting there all the way at the bottum. Where it sits when the car is off. And whats a CEL?

Shane

You say your stock gauge is pausing at 0, how about your aftermarket gauge? Also a CEL is a Check Engine Light...go to napa or something and they will usually hook it up for free and tell you what the code is. And like Keith said do a boost leak test as this would cause severe problems.

No. The STOCK boost gauge isnt even working now. It did before the CEL came on. The aftermarket guage shows its boosting.. When i accelerate, it goes from vacuum.. stops at 0psi for a moment then continues on up to 13psi. I can feel the pause when im driving to..

What could it be though? Something expensive i hope not? The car runs fine while boosting. All except that pause. Sometimes it pauses, sometimes it doesnt. Could it just be a leak some place or something simple like that?

I didnt read all the replies, so hopefully this isnt a repost, but it sounds to me like your MAF either got unplugged or it took a dump on you. Clean all the connections and use some quality dielectric grease on the plug, plug it back in and see if it starts working. If not then take it in and find out what codes its throwing. But my money is on the MAF.
I had mine come unplugged once and it just makes these things run like crap with its not hooked up. Ran just as you described.

the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor on your air-filter) wouldnt cause the factory boost gauge to just stop working. lets not make any assumptions yet untill he gets the CEL checked. go get it checked out tomorrow. in the meantime, look under the hood and see if any of the intercooler pipes seem loose, or disconected. like i said before, dont drive your car in boost till you get it looked at.

Mass Air Flow sensor. Its the black box in between your intake and your air filter that has a huge plug plugging into it. Its full of this honeycomb metal stuff and a small air sensor in the middle of it. BE VERY CAREFUL OF THE HONEYCOMB if you take it off. If you bend them it messes with the readings of the MAF.

joyfil, Im not saying to jump to any conclusions, but checking that MAF plug is a VERY easy task, and Im sorry but when mine came unplugged my boost gauge did exactly as he's describing. It was literally like the factory boost gauge depends on the MAF readings or something with the MAF causes the crappy boost readings.

Dealers may be closed today, but iirc, doesn't advance auto and autozone do those checks for free? Pretty sure they do them here.

If you want to get it done today, you could always just build yourself something to pull the code. I made one with a red LED and some wires. I looked around at Vfaq, but couldn't find the place I got my instructions from.

A pocketlogger of some sort is a great way to pull your own CEL codes too.

I talked to my cousin (who i bought the car from)..

He said the CEL is always on becuase of things they did in the past to the car (mod wise). He also said the stock boost guage never worked LOL.. But i could of sworn i seen it work..

So that just leaves the pause at 0psi.. Its really annoying.

Im still gonna have the CEL checked out just incase. But im sure its nothing. It might have just come back on.. No idea why it was off. We think the people who fixed a ball joint in the car before i got it, turned it off and now its just back.

ok, didnt know that. hopefully he can figure this out.:thumb:

that CEL being there is always going to hinder your performance. get it looked at and get it fixed. also, you should do a boost leak test. i guarantee you have some leaks.

The light could be on because of the catalytic converter not removing enough of the emissions if you have an aftermarket exhaust.

Problem fixed.. Now i am running to rich:cry:. MY air/fuel guage says so. So now what do i do??

Shane

Good to hear the CEL is cleared, but if I was you I would get with your cousin and get a detailed list of exactly what mods he already did to the car. If anything flaky pops up, that info is going to help you to diagnose the problem. Do you have a logger also? I wouldn't trust just your A/F gauge because that may be a bit off.

Actually the factory boost guage is not a real boost guage at all. It is dependent on the MAF. The factory ECU reads the air flow and calculates boost based on that. That's why it's not exactley accurate.
What exactley was the problem? Was it the MAF? Check for boost leaks that's usually the cause of all these problems.
