rear speakers are acting stupid

Heres where im at: for weeks now ive been trying to get the rear 2 speakers in my car to work properly. theyll be working fine, then for no apparent reason, one of them will die. after a while, the other one dies, just leaving me with the front 2 speakers. I have swapped the head unit, and that wasnt the problem. So i began messing with the wiring harness just behind the head unit, and as it turns out, there is a loose connection somewhere back there.

what is irritating is that i will get the speakers working for a few hours, then the back 2 will die again. over the weeks, i have narrowed the problem down to the clear plastic plug that connects the wiring harness to the head unit. the head unit is from a Galant, so the wiring harness is all stock. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem? and how do i go about fixing a loose connection inside the plastic plug. seriously, some help here, this is driving me insane.
 
One way you could do is get another plug out of a mitsu and cut your plug out and solder a new one in..
 
stock radio deck?

If not run new speaker wires off the deck under the carpet to the speakers. I had to do that with mine when the Jackass decided to cut the wiring harness instead of unplugging the plug when he stole it.
 
if it is the plug behind the radio, and not a short in the wiring behind the radio( check it too as i have seen wires rub against stuff even plastic and short out in a heartbeat and check the wiring down the door steps- ill list the colors in a moment), then the plug is most likely just worn out i see a lot of the older mitsu plugs get like that, ive seen them so bad that you can wiggle them behind the radio and make the radios switch on and off, you can go to a local car audio shop and buy a new plug made by METRA, and wire it in to replace your worn out one and match up the colors. or like greddyturbo19 stated, go with an aftermarket deck- we sell a ton of jvc's and sony's and you can get them cheap- like a 100 bucks cheap, sometimes $79 at walmart, and wire it straight to the factory wiring. as for the wire colors they are:

+12v- red/black
ignition- blue
illumination- green/white
antenna- white/black
lf speaker + white/blue
- black/blue
rf speaker + white/red
- black/red
lr speaker + yellow/blue
- gray/blue
rr speaker + yellow/red
- gray/red

yea, its kinda like this. when i take out the head unit, but leave it connected, i can wiggle the wires and get the back 2 speakers to turn on and off. is that a problem with the plug or the wires themselves?
 
most of the time its in the plug where the plastic wears out where the pins go in. every once in a while it is the wires where they have corroded and are about to break, but 9 out of 10 it is the plug itself. if the wires are bad you can wiggle them they will break usually.
 
had the same prob. did you check the wires that are plugged into the speakers? might sound stupid to go through all that work and come to find out that it was the speakers. same prob
 
Maybe they'll just get all better by themselves. That seems to be what you're hoping for.

If you want to fix it, re-wire.

well, im trying to get the best feel for what the problem is, because i have been *trying* to fix this issue for months. I have redone all the spliced connections, inspected the wires for breaks or crimps etc etc... but i have never fixed the problem for more than a day or two.

a few days ago, i took a stab at fixing the connection in the plastic connector piece, and so far so good. Im going on Day-3 with no speaker interruptions. :thumb:
 
i could have bet money that the problem was in the connector. i manage a car audio shop so i see it all the time.:thumb:
