My friend has a 1997 Automatic GSX. Mods so far are cone air filter, optima battery, and 3 inch vrs turbo back exhaust with high flow cat and 3 inch o2 eliminator.

His exhaust manifold is leaking and causing heavy fumes that has got worse since he installed the exhaust. He's using this reason to make an upgrade though.

His goal is to make a nice mix of a street car that sees the drag strip and wants to eventually reach the magic 500hp goal. Doing this keeping stock flange setups that will bolt to the 3 inch o2 eliminator and fit nicely.

I told him it would be best to probably change his turbo while changes his exhaust manifold out since it will be easy to get to at that point and less work of having to tear it apart later.

As I look through all the manifolds and turbos im getting confused on what will work. From what I know a cast manifold will be more reliable than a tubular manifold since they can be prone to cracking moreso than cast. (correct me if I'm wrong).

So I'm not sure if he could pick his final turbo that would take him to 500hp now from near stock level and still be decent until he gets that all together (I'm thinking not). But if hes gonna pick up an intermediate turbo to use for a while that will take him over 300whp I was thinking he could find something used thats still good or new but not so expensive.

As far as the manifold, which ones are good that will maintain all the stock bolt on flanges?

is that setup saying i need to have an external wastegate? How does that fit and where at?

there is a provision on the HAFE SS exhaust manifold where the external wastegate would mount.

seen in the picture below ;) [ the diamond shape, would be drilled and have a hole in the center, wastegate would mount there )

you can also get the 6152E turbo in an internally gated version too.

Though you need to make sure you get the 6152e with the mitsu housing version to bolt up to the HAFE exhaust manifold.

Another option is the Slowboy Racing G50 50 trim with mitsu housing to bolt up to the HAFE manifold.

ok, great thanks. so the turbos mentioned would be ok for stock power levels for a while and then leave room to be used for the upgraded power as he can afford it. just trying to be cost effective as possible. thanks.

also, my other question is, if he chooses to only replace the manifold this does bolt up to the stock t25 right?
