I feel like a noob for asking this question. Im trying to understand. I have a 92 Eclipse GST fully rebuild. I was trying to figure out why Im getting soo much knock. Got me a new knock sensor and that wasn't the problem. Anyway I decide to disconnect the knock sensor and turn on the engine. While the car is at idle I push the gas petal to 25% to 35% of throttle body and it show 9 counts of knock according to the datalogger. That’s the highest number it can go. Funny thing is that the knock sensor is disconnect and why it’s showing knock? My question the ECU automatically to do this when the knock sensor failed to connect? Or I have a bad ECU? Thanks in advance.

If I rember corectly the ecu will retard the timming as far as possible when it can not find a knock sensor. So by disconecting it the circuit is no longer complete because its just a vrs sensor that uses two wires and makes its own voltage. Im not positive as far as how it works with dsm ecu's but I know others will retard the timing to protect the engine. Whats your knock count with it plugged in? Also have you checked your base timming?

9 counts is the default it goes to when there is no sensor or a bad sensor, it will pull the timing back to somewhat protect the motor.
Mine also defaults to 9 counts when its unhooked to.

With the knock sensor connected it show 10+ counts of knock while I give 20 to 30 percent of throttle body during idle. I don't have the timing cover any more. I should of kept it. I do retard the timing as much.

Thanks. So I guess Im not the only one who have 9 counts of knock while the knock sensor is disconnected. I thought that I might have a bad ECU.
