okay, i have a 2wheel drive car and i just found out ( after my mechanic took it apart to fix it) i have an awd flywheel in my 2wheel drive car. well anyways the problem that occured was when i purchased the car it started fine, then for some reason on a really cold night my starter grinds on my flwheel. so i take it to my mechanic who replaces the starter and it doesnt touch the flywheel. so anyways, he thinks it the flwheel so he takes off the tranny and says i need a new clutch too. so i buy the clutch and the 2 wheel drive flywheel that was made for my car and not another awd flywheel that was on my car in the first place. anyways he puts the flyweel and starter on and the starter still dont make contact with the flywheel. so he wants me to order another awd flywheel that seemed to work with my car in the first place. and the new starter that i got is somehow deeper on the gear then the one that was originally on there. so he is going to put on the awd flyweel and the deeper starter on it. he thinks that the 2wd car should have an awd flywheel. but its 2wd!!!! anyways he also said that the grinding might have been from the starter being too small. and i wanted to know is there a diameter difference in the flywheels and also how could an awd flywheel that turned over the car, and then changed to what its suppose to be flywheel (2wd) not work but the awd on 2wd flywheel worked? was there a tranny swap? its a 6 bolt engine and the car was manufactured on january of 92. all help is appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check out: DSM Transmission rebuilds

about 3/4 the way down is this:
Q: I have a FWD car, but I want a better transmission just like you make for AWD cars. Is this possible and how much does it cost?

A: Yes! We can actually do this for the same cost as our AWD rebuilds. All you need to do is place your order through our website for an AWD transmission rebuild and ship us an AWD transmission, and put in the Notes section of your order that the transmission is for a FWD car so it should be shipped as a FWD transmission. Read this carefully! You need to ship us an ALL WHEEL DRIVE transmission because the parts won't fit in a FWD case. This will (obviously) not make your FWD car AWD, all we do is convert the AWD transmission you send into a FWD transmission with all of the AWD modifications that we offer (except (obviously) for the center differential.) You will need to use an AWD flywheel and starter plate so it will match to your engine properly. We make the AWD transmission work in a FWD car through modification of the front and rear differentials and removal of the T-case output shaft.

Sounds like you may be lucky enough to have one of these.

i may have a awd tranny, but as far as i know a swap was never done. it might have been but sounds unlikely unless his tranny crapped on him. but that dont make sense. another thing is when i try to look at the engine info and the tranny code its scratched off. could it be stolen?? that what my friend thinks but its got a title and everything.

anyone with other opinions?

Do not bump your threads.

you will notice that there will be a shaft for the transfer case if the transmission is for an awd. AWD transmissions are stronger than fwd transmissions. AWD flywheels are smaller than FWD flywheels. I 2 good awd 6 bolt flywheels and 1 fwd 7 bolt flywheel, incase you need parts, they are ready to put on and cleaned up.

hmm, well all i know is that my car will probably start if i put an awd flywheel in it because the fwd flywheel is too small. i have a 6 bolt flywheel that was made in january 92. and that 7 bolt flywheel that your talking about is not what i need. i need to know why my flywheel dont work when its made specifically for the car that i am putting it on. the flywheel being a manual shift 4g63 flywheel. i am so confused. is there any diameter difference in the two flywheels between manual awd and manual 2wd. also i think my engine and tranny were swapped because i have no dsm plate numbers because someone scratched them off and also no tranny code but a barcode because they are erased. my conclusion: stolen motor and trans. but that still dont solve my problem. any other info would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

pictures of you motor and tranny will help. I know that FWD flywheels are Bigger. AWD flywheels are smaller. I put an awd flywheel on a fwd car and no contact of the starter to the flywheel.

If you have an awd transmission you need an awd flywheel. if you have a fwd transmission you need a fwd flywheel. do you have the sheild for the transmission, the metal plate between the tranny and motor and starter and tranny.

you need a fwd n/t flywheel clutch, tranny, sheild, and starter. simple. find all of those parts, put them on your car and it will work. none of this might be maybe shit. get the right parts for you car and it will work.
try to mix match shit and it won't. post pictures and I can help identify.

my car has been a 2.0 auto, a 2.0 5 speed n/t setup, a 2.0 fwd turbo 5 speed setup, and soon a AWD. I belive i know thing or two about dsm driveline parts.
