So I bought a second evo3 turbo because it was cheap and I noticed the flapper has some stuff on it and the flapper will not open at all. I can't even move the flapper arm to open it. Could anybody tell me what is on the flapper. I don't know if it has been welded or what. Here is a picture

The fact that the flapper is rusting and in that shape means it's probably been welded. Also, you're fins look prettty chewed up on the hot-side of that turbo..

The fins looking chewed up might be because of the way the picture was taken and there being black dirt(whatever you want to call it) on the blades So could I just get another exhaust housing that has a good flapper on it and use the turbo that way?

Dang!! The metal termite strikes again!!! ROFL Maybe it had been welded once upon a time. Sounds like a great excuse to upgrade to a 34mm flapper.

Lol it looks like it is brown putty that has hardened around the flapper, so i thought what was the owner trying to do with this. But I have read the 34mm isn't as good for high boost levels. So if I can just find a good condition Hotside housing with a functional wastegate couldn't I swap them out since the rest of the turbo is in good shape? And to add on to that question, it would have to be an evo3 housing correct?

Ok so can this be undone or should I just find someone that is selling an evo3 hotside housing with a working flapper? Not sure if that is the technical term for it.

that honestly depends on the condition of the housing itself. You MIGHT be able to get away with removing the flapper, flattening out the wg opening and putting a new flapper on, but I dont have a definite answer.

Regardless of what you do you probably will still hit boost creep. Read: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...boost-creep-modified-wga-peepers-mod-how.html

The WG arm does not extend enough to open the flapper completely anyway. Either get another WGA with a longer arm and new flapper after you clean up that mess, or..... go external like me :D Solved my boost creep problems pretty much and it sounds mean as hell WOT. But it might not be the sound for you, try riding in a car that has one and see if you like it. Otherwise, GL with that flapper :|

Okay so does anyone know where I can find just an evo3 turbine housing that has a functional flapper or do they not sell those by themselves? That way I can just replace it and go because everything else looks to be fine

Any 7cm^2 turbine housing will work from a 16g, it just won't be the "lightweight" style. A 6cm^2 housing from a 14b will work as well, but is a downgrade(depends on your point of view).

It looks like they attempted to weld it shut but couldn't get the correct angle with it so far back in the housing.
To anyone out there who wants to weld their flapper shut, why not pull put a tack weld on the pivot connecting it to the bushing? At least then its easily reversible...

7cm Turbine Housing this is about the only new 7cm turbine housing I could find. I bet it costs more than you got that turbo for though.

ok thanks for that info and yep the housing by itself cost mor than I paid for the turbo LOL. I guess I will have to figure something out or sell it to someone looking to go external since the flapper is welded.

Look around for a used turbine housing. A blown 16g would be a good candidate; any variant will work.

I wouldn't buy a new turbine housing if it costs the same as most decent condition 16gs...

The other option is going external and finding an exhaust manifold flanged for an external wastegate like the previous turbo owner had.
