Can anybody guess this knock?

Ok so I bought a 1990 Laser R/S a few weeks ago. When I purchased it I was told all it needed was rod bearings. Well after replacing the rod bearings it seemed to have run smooth for the first few minutes. I did not get on it because I was trying to let the bearings get seated in but I had no option but to drive it home from the residence where we did the work. I do have a small oil leak from the oil pan due to a bad gasket but I sealed it up with RVT silicone. It is still leaking very slowly but I was keeping a close eye on the oil on the 20 mile journey home. Ok So when I got back home, I noticed a knock on the top end. :toobad: <embed width="448" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" src="http://i86.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid86.photobucket.com/albums/k83/platinumplayax1/MOV01044.flv"> It is not AS BAD as the vid sounds thats just how the cam picked it up probably from putting it so close to the valve cover. The knock is at all RPMs. Need new lifters? running extremely rich? Maybe just needs a good tune up with timing and everything reset? I had some fouled plugs and it smokes quite a bit in the higher RPMs. Also last night while cruising it aruond the block, I decided to let it boost up a little bit and once it hit about 4500 rpm and 12 lbs boost I heard a loud POP :coy: Please watch the video and let me know.

Sounds like really bad lifter tick. One of the lifters could be failed.

I will check them tomorrow, I should be able to tell when I pop the valve cover off and turn it over by hand right? If it is a bad lifter and I have been driving it around the block a few times can it damage anything else internally?

dude thats going to make me cry. :( hope its just a stuck lifter.

You arent alone bro!! :cry::cry:

Thats definetly a bad lifter.

Are you positive? I really hope so, so far 3 out of 3 responses have said bad lifter. I will pull the valve cover off tomorrow and turn it over by hand to check everything out. I may pull the lifters off and clean them out to see if that helps as I have heard they get filled with sludge and start to knock. If only it is that simple!! :thumb: Also I noticed my timing belt feels just a tad bit loose. Maybe it slipped a couple teeth? How do I check if it slipped?

The previous owner did mention that he has just put new lash adjusters in so I hope that they arent messed up. I may be ordering a freshly rebuilt engine this weekend but if I do not need it then I would rather dump the $1200 into my current motor. What do you guys think?

that made me cringe...... i hope its only bad lifter. counds like valvetrain for sure. one thing to try before you tear it down. drain 1 quart of oil.(only 1 quart) add 1 quart of ATF mercon to the engine oil. let it idle for at least 5 min. then change the oil and filter. the lifter could just be clogged. my first talon had a sound ALMOST that bad from an improperly filling lifter caused by $hit clogging it us. ATF has alot of detergents that eat away gunk and crap. give it a shot. could be all you need

also, turning it over by hand wont tell you much. the lifters dont move much without pressure so they will all apear partially colapsed.

Definitely sounds like a lifter. Just bite the bullet and replace them with the 3g design. They work great and well worth the investment.

I would like to but I am terrified that may just be a temporary fix til something else goes wrong. I dont know what is wrong with this car it could just be because it is running extremely rich and needs a tune but I cant even get on the gas without it bogging. It will go for sec til it starts to boost then it just kinda nose dives and starts jerking. I am pretty sure there are no boost leaks as I have gone through and reassured that quite a few times. In my eyes 'biting the bullet' is replacing the engine :barf: Who knows how much this car has been through in its past with the previous owner? Everything is rigged up and something just seems kinda fishy. I was telling him about this ticking problem earlier and he just starts mentioning 'I am starting to think crankwalk blah blah blah' just started going off on random stuff. Also I remember him mentioning something about running some monster turbo pushing 20+ psi. I have no clue if that was on MY engine or not!! :beatentodeath::beatentodeath::beatentodeath:

To be honest, I highly doubt it's crankwalk, the beauty of the 6 bolt is the chances of crankwalk are very slim, that's why so many people "upgrade" their 7 bolts to 6 bolts. Also, the sound doesn't go away as the rev's are increased, which would more than likely indicate lifter tick... with that said, I would guess rod knock.

I doubt it is rod knock. With rod knock you would hear it two times per rpm since the crank rotates twice as fast than the cams. Also, the sound would seem lower in the engine than it is. That sound is coming from the top of the engine. Like I said earlier trade out your lifters. A guy on ebay sells the 3g style lifters for about $80 to your door HERE. :thumb:

Spend the $80 and replace the lifters. If something else is broken after then you will be able tell. Once you have the cams out and everything else just go around and check the springs just incase.

yea i would say replace the lifters if it keeps making the tick then its not the lifters. But since you will be taking the lifters out while you're working on it i would say just replace the whole valve train, springs, retainers, etc. when you figure out what the problem is once you fix it let me know.

Another thing to check is the crank pulley. They split pretty often and make a lot of racket . Stand over the drivers side fender and look down at it. Then pop the gas and see if it wobbles if it doesn't then then that's one more thing to rule out.
