So i got a 2g off my friend who rebuilt the motor with topline .040 pistons and stock 1g rods. He couldnt get it started so i bought it off him and got it up and running. As soon as i started it i noticed a massive amount of blue smoke. It was also missing really bad. Knowing that it wasnt right i shut it down and pulled a plug.. All 4 had oil on them. I cleaned the plugs and started it up. Same problem. I let it idle and then took it around the block. It ran like it was on 3 cyl. Got back and pulled the plugs again. So i pulled the head and pulled a rod. The pistons where tightly in place with no slop. I snapped some photos of the piston and rings.. I was wondering if anyone can help me out..
O and all the rings where turned and facing away from each other

The head was perfectly fine until the bottom end was rebuilt.. I dont know how to check the gap but i do know he said he didnt file down the middle one at all and just a hair off the top..

And i think its a little more then valve seals.. There oil coming out of a exhaust leak between the turbo and manifold

Yeah that is a specific problem. Check your coolant as well, if its milky the oil is mixing with the coolant. It should be a vomit brown color, with curds everywhere. Check the tourque on your head. I used 100 on my 93 6 bolt swap and had no issues. The head shouldn't lift if there are studs in the block. Good luck man. report back!

^^^*check your turbo as well. Seems like it is pushing oil through the seals, because the only way to get oil into your exhaust + blue smoke would be through the turbo.

Oil looks fine. No sign of coolant? Im stumped. How off would the gap have to be to cause this much oil to be let into the cyl?

It would have to be "way" off.
Take a ring off a piston and put it in the cylinder, use the piston to push it down a bit and square it up.
Then take a feeler gauge and measure the gap. That is piston ring endgap.

Turbos perfectly fine. I dont know what it could be. Im waiting for a feeler guage to get here.

If you install the rings upside down, they will smoke and leak oil everywhere through the exhaust manifold ports.

Look for the "DOT", "Letter" or some other marking that tells you which side is up. If the marking was placed upside down, you will need to purchase new rings and redo it.

The marked side MUST face upwards. There is a bevel on the rings and if they are placed upside down, they will leak oil past them.

Ok... you said that the rings have numbers on them? are the numbers facing up? + make sure the ring gaps are where they are suppose to be!... that can cause tons of oil to reach to the top if you don't have the ring gaps where they are suppose to be. Also, have the cyl walls honed. are all the valves on the cyl head seating? Since you said it feels like if it was on 3 cyls.

All the cyl seemed to be leaking oil. I noticed that the oil rings on the bottom seem to be very weak like maybe i got the wrong ones. I can easily compress them with my fingers..

I know the bottom oil rings dont stick out as much as the top to but shouldnt they be close.. Heres a pic with them pushed out as far as they will go compared to the top

Took that maft off and put a stock intake on. hah.. Im gonna get the head pressure tested then because im out of options. Everything seems fine.

I took the exhaust manifold off and the ports and covered in oil.. A compression test wouldnt show if the oil rings where the problem would it?

Might try a leakdown test, you should here the air blowing into the crankcase if the rings are the problem. Any word on what the endgap was?

All the end gaps seemed fine. Does anyone know if topline piston rings are the kind the dont need filed down and just fit because the kid said he didnt file them down and they seemed to be gapped pretty good..
