Im going to look at a used motor for my DD tomorrow and I'm not entirely sure what I should check to make sure it is useable. I am not looking for it to be running so that isn't the issue. I am more worried about cracks, seized, wrecked head etc.. Anything that would make it unable to be rebuilt.

Im wondering what are some tests you guys do when you pick up a motor, or what all really needs to be checked for? I really don't want to spend money on a motor that can't be rebuilt.

Make sure the timing marks are aligned and that you can spin the motor by hand. If you can take off the oil pan and check for metal shavings.

There isn't really a so called weak spot that I know of on these motors. However just look it over close and look for light lines in the block. Thats a good sign of a crack or stress mark. Other then that not much you can do besides turn it over and check the oil if its sittin on the ground. Also not a bad idea to try and move the crank in and out to check bearings. Good luck...
