So my wife and I went today and put the money down on that 1996 GSX!!! Picking it up on tuesday, we can't wait. It has an open BOV and I know no matter how cool it is it has to go...the only other performance mods are new filter and a mbc. I need to do all the maintanance first, is there anything more important then the rest? The car has 116K miles and is the one with a leaking valve cover, he says sometimes there is oil up by the plugs, but he has a full gasket set. And I also wanted to take the chance to thank everyone again in helping in our DSM descision!!! This comunity rocks and we can't wait to get into our new car.

The oil shows up out side the valve cover on top in the area around the plugs. Are the belt and pump hard to replace, I'll do a few searches on the site to try and figure out the best brands, I want to look and see if there is an electronic water pump for our car, I know one was made for my GTP.

Check for any cracks on your valve cover. You have to look really close since they are usually hairline thin cracks. I would check for them around the bolts and corners in the recessed area where the plugs are.

If you could Please fill out You're profile...

Does the car have boost guage? you mentioned it has a MBC....?
IF it doesn't... First thing I would do is reconect the stock Boost controller (BCS), Until you get a Boost guage in there...Or just turn it down to a easy 12psi. Safer than sorry!

When it comes You're day to replace that leaking BOV (ROFL after you're first boost leak test) .... Don't be shy, get the best you can. Don't dick around with "crush" mods etc.. Just buy a good one and never think about it again..

So take the cover off, clean, and check for really small cracks? And also check for a oil cap gasket. The BOV doesn't leak, it's just an atmosphere vented one. And my profile should be updated now.

Ohh and it does have a boost gauge in in a dual pod, ###### gonna replace it with a triple with a better boost, an A/F, and EGT? not sure about that third choice. I'd really like to do nitrous because I never have so a pressure gauge maybe.

Congrats on the purchase. You can easily find a new or used vc on ebay for around $60. I got my "jdm" valve cover for a friend for $20 and i sprayed it flat black, killer deal and look :rocks: Also replace the whole gasket set new with new pcv valve and oil cap like i did. I have 0 oil leaks on my dsm :D

I just had the same problem with oil by the plugs,I changed the gasket but it still was leaking there seemed to be no cracks but every time the motor warmed up there was a little crack so i bought a new valve cover for 25$ and now there no more oil leaking! :) so check your valve cover when you take it off...

It's going to be a DD. And it came with a gasket set so I'm set there. I think I will just order a new VC and oil cap and be done with it. While I'm changing the timing belt should I change the cam gears to the adjustable ones I've seen all over the place for future use, or not even bother? I think Iwill get a clear belt cover, I like te look of them. How big of a hurry should I be in to change that BOV? And the car is coming with a new cat back system minus the muffler so I need to get that on too, he hada shop break loose all the joints on the stock exaust so now it makes some noise. Over all I think we got a good deal for $2,900

The cam gears are not needed at all. With your car the way it is I would say spend the money elsewhere. What BOV is on the car? If it's the stock plastic POS then a 1G BOV can be had for $15 to $40 depending on the condition, you'll need a new flange also. A couple other maintenance things you can do is to get new plugs and wires. Get BPR6ES plugs and gap them to .028.

nice to see the addition to the community:thumb:

With the amount of miles I would just start with basic maintance like the timing belt and do the balance shaft eliminator kit while your there, change all your fluids i.e trans, oil, gear fluid, coolant and so on , get a compression test done , call the dealer and check on the TSB and recalls for your car. As far as what kind of gaskets or belts to use OEM are the way to go and dont be shy to ask for Club DSM discount sometimes it worth about 15-20% off:sneaky:. There is an ungodly amount of info on this site that will help you on your way to fixing just about any problem that may arise cause. OH and the most important part have FUN

Best advice I can give you is really to be careful whose advice you take on forums.

The oil issue will most likely be from the oil cap. If it was the valve cover gasket it would not end up in the area you are saying that it is in. If it was mine that is what I would replace before doing the vc gasket.

Is this your first dsm? If so I wish you the best of luck and hope you have plenty of room to work on it.:beatentodeath:
