I just picked up a 92 awd. Motor was just rebuilt with 1g rods and 2g pistons. It currently has the stock 450cc's, an SSAC fmic, 16g turbo, and a walbro 225 fuel pump and a custom 2.5" turbo back exhaust. Currently boosting 17psi. My question is it safe to drive this way without being tuned? In my opinion I dont think it is. I think i need an AFPR also. What would I need to get it safe to drive on the street. I eventually want to get DSM Link but right now the funds are short for that. Could I invest in an SAFC and just do a base line street tune or would it be better to have it dyno tuned? I want to start off in the right direction and not destory anything. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Added: The car came with a set of Precision Engineering 680cc injectors uninstalled, and I also have a Palm with MMCD.

You definitely need an AFPR along with bigger injectors and also SAFC. I know it sounds like a lot of things but if you want to run more than 14 psi on the 16g you need more fuel in there and 450cc injectors won't do. The 255lph pump needs an afpr for sure. It's kind of an overkill for a 16g anyways, you could get away with a 190 lph with no problems but since it's already there, you do need to control that fuel. 550cc or even 650cc injectors with SAFC and a data logger would be a decent combo to allow you to run the 16g at 18 or so PSI.

Sorry I should have also stated that I do have a palm with mmcd on it, and when I bought the car it came with a set of brand new Precision engineering 680cc injectors. I apologize for leaving that out. I dont want to just throw the 680's in because more fuel isnt always better, especially when you cant control it, thats why I was thinking I need an AFPR. Thank you in advance.

In that case, put them on :)
However, you do need SAFC to control them and sadly SAFC is not very good for anything bigger than 650. I guess 680 is close enough. So you just need an SAFC and AFPR and you are good to go. When getting into bigger injectors it's also good to have a wideband but start with these two things and use the palm for now. Always look for knock. There is a lot of information on these sites for how to tune optimally. Just take it easy and don't rush it.

Thank you very much that was the answer I was looking for. I am honestly in no rush to grenade a motor. A friend of mine had a 2g GSX which is why I am here now. I have been browsing around here reading about tuning, and do you suggest following the guides on here for a street tune, or spending the money and getting a dyno tune?

Thank you in advance.

With the mods you have, it will be a pretty simple tune if you do it yourself. If you want to get it tuned to the max then a dyno tune is always the best way, IF they know what they are doing. It would be a good experience for you to do it yourself though. No one can teach you what you learn from experience. You will see how your car behaves and reacts to changes in the fuel and so on.

Thanks once again. I wasn't sure how complicated it would be to tune with my setup as of right now. I would also love to learn more about the car espically like you said how it reacts to various adjustments. I like to know whats going on with it rather than just guessing.

Just keep in mind that once you buy the SAFC and start adjusting the fuel, it takes a while for the changes to take effect. The fuel trims change every 15 to 30 minutes, not right away. So don't raise the fuel too much with the SAFC and keep raising because you don't see any changes. Give it some time.

It's a good idea to go to the mmcd website and read about how the logger works and what to look for. Not all readings from the logger are needed or used. The less things you monitor the faster they update.
