Electrical Boost Gauge Install

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

In most cases, like with the Greddy Electronic Boost Gauge, you will get an electronic sending unit that mounts in the engine bay, and there will be a wiring harness that runs through the firewall to your gauge instead of a thin vacuum/boost line. You'll likely have GND, 12VDC+, IGN, and backlight wires, or something similar.

My guess is Anthony is asking why you'd go from a mechanical to electric boost gauge. I would also ask the same question, but it really doesn't matter. It's your car, and you can install whatever you'd like.

Here is the installation instructions for an Autometer electric boost gauge. As you can see, you'll still need to tap into a vacuum line for a boost source.

I was wondering if anyone has the Prosport electrical boost guage. I'm new to electrical boost guages. My question is how do you wire the pressure sensor to the gauge itself?

What type of gauge is it (performance, premium, etc)? I know the premiums come with a wiring harness complete with connectors so I can't see how that can confuse you (assuming you bought a premium gauge).

Okay well i figured it out. It's all wired up but now the gauge wont shut off. The directions say wire the red to a 12v ignition switch so i tapped it into the 12v on the turbo timer. The guage stays on even with the key out and the lights off. To me it seems like the power wire should be wired to the acc (blue) wire at the key. What do you guys think?

You must have tapped into a constant 12v power supply. Get a multimeter and find a 12v power supply that only gets power when the key is turned on.

Wouldnt that be the same as an acc wire at the ignition?

Yes, but please use a multimeter to make SURE you have the wire you want. It's not wise to tap into wires you're unsure of.

What will a multi meter do for me? At the ignition the solid blue wire is acc right?

I don't mean to sound like an ass. i'm just asking questions

I'm not sure if the blue wire is accessory power or not.

A multimeter can tell you though. Check the voltage at the wire you're interested in - if it has no voltage with the key off, but it has voltage with the key to accessory then it is a source for accessory power. As a general rule of thumb I ALWAYS check the polarities of wires before I tap into them. Even if I'm almost positive I know the polarity of a wire I check it just to be absolutely sure.

Alright man. Thanks for your help. I'll see what i can do tomorrow.

Never trust the color of a wire.

First, check the wire with the key out of the ignition with a multimeter, it should read 0v. Then, put the key in and to the accessory position and recheck the wire. If the same wire reads 12v, you know you found the correct wire.

Electrical problems are no fun, it's never worth it to guess you have the right wire by color, just some advice I've picked up from previous experiences.

I just wired up mine today. I asked Defiant if I could make a tech article on this matter. Hopefully he says yes, and I'll post the link here and other places amongst the forums for everyone that had any questions about the prosport boost gauge.

If anyone needs an immdiate question answered just pm me!

Guys I know I never wrote up a thing for this but I am doing a write up for it tomorrow! So for everyone that pm'd me it'll be up and running tomorrow =D

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but this it seemed more appropriate than starting a new one.

I just got myself some electrical STRI gauges and I am wondering about the wiring...

They got 4 wires and the manual says to hook them up to Ignition, Constant 12V, Illumination switch and Ground.

These gauges have peak recall and warning setting and I am thinking that that's the reason it needs constant 12V power, right?
What happens if I do not connect that wire? Or if I just connect it to the ignition? I don't really want to use these funktions and I don't want anymore drain on the battery with the car off...

I should do a write up for mine i never did finish it =(

Sorry everyone, too much going on last year, hopefully I'll get off my lazy butt and write up an install LOL
