Six Bolt Cam Sprocket Craziness

Well, I jumped timing last week. First off, the car has a sixbolt swap that was done by the previous owner. After I pulled the timing belt and everything, I came across something weird on the cam sprocket. It looks like the key way was ground over in order to advance timing? The way it was the sprocket could rotate on the crank. Does anyone have an explanation of what is going on here? I cant think of a reason as to why they would have done this.

the key either wore out or they hammered it in wrong. Get a new one.

to clarify, you shouldn't have to hammer it in, but thats kind of what it looks like in that pic.

My guess is that the Woodruff key that had been used was undersize. Check the crank nose for similar damage. If there is any, you're in to big dollars.
That sprocket it scrap.
