manual rack

im sure ill hear about this for a while but....


im converting to a manual steering rack. less weight 1 less acces. for the engine to run.

i have all the power steering stuff off except for the rack but im having a little trouble locating a manual rack what i want to do till i locate one is to loop the input and output of the power rack together so it still moves fluid and stays lubed anyone see any problems with this as a temp. job till i locate a manual rack or anyyone have a manual rack and passanger side bracket they want to sell

You need to hunt for a 1.8L car that didn't get the optional PS; they were the only cars that had it since PS was standard on all the 1G turbo cars. Most of the 1.8L cars I've come across have also had the option, so manual racks tend to be somewhat hard to find. Best bet is to search the classifieds on the various forums for a manual rack.

I have also read in a few places that you can run with the PS just short looped together, for how long I am not sure but for the mean time it would probably be just fine. This isn't experience so take it with a grain of salt, but this isn't the first time this has come up.

no i read about it earlier and was thinking about it fpr the past few weeks and since as off late i havent found a manual rack and ive looked at ###### 200 junk 1G's so im looking for something to work for a short time not a permanet fix

I've also heard this. Furthermore, having it looped around is for some reason easier to steer than a manual rack or a power rack without it looped around.

If you go to the link I posted earlier and search for a manual rack you will find many listed. I personaly bought mine from a junk yard off of there for $40 shipped with the manual bushing. Don't listen to people who tell you "I've heard" unless they know on a first hand expericence. The manual rack is MUCH eaiser to steer than ANY looped power rack. The only thing you sacrifice is the racks turning ratio. It takes more turns on the manual rack to go from side stop to side stop, yet it is much easier at a stand still. When moving even just a little there is not much difference between the two racks.

yeah i filled tha tout waiting for them to get back to me i wasnt planning on doing that for a prolonged period just a temp till i get my manual rack if i could get one 40 shipped id be all over it thanks again for "GOOD" advice

Just to jump in, according to what I've read (take with a grain of salt) the manual rack weighs more then the power steering rack. If you do end up getting one if you could weigh them and report back it'd be appreciated by all.
