I am putting shifter cables in my car for my manual trans swap. I got the cables in the car, but which cable goes to which part on the shifter? I honestly can't figure it out. Which cable goes on the "side-to-side" part, and which cable goes on the "up and down" part. One of the cables has a little black bushing in it, and the other cable has a little white bushing in it. Can anyone tell me how to know which cables go where? (and also explain how I can tell which is which?)

I tried just judging by which cable was longer, but the cables actually move through the little firewall bracket, making it impossible to tell. Thanks

come on man its simple, go in the car and look at the cable connected to the shifter that moves left and right(bottom), it only moves when in neutral. Then follow that cable to the engine bay and put it on the neutral selector thingy it only goes up and down.

ok... I don't know if you understand this. My car is automatic. I am swapping to manual, and the manual trans is not in the car yet. The cables that I got are a little bit messed up, and it is hard to tell which one goes to which part of the cable. Thank you for nothing:notgood::toobad::beatentodeath:

The shifter cable that has the white bushing inside the car goes on the lever closest to the driver, and the one with a black bushing goes on the side furthest from the driver....Also does your cables have a bracket that bolts to the firewall, if so, one cable is on the left and the other on the right, that is how it goes.

My recommendation: don't use "messed up" cables. Why put all sorts of money and time into a project only to have a crappy setup when you're done?

Once you have the new trans in it should be fairly easy to see how the cables hook up. Check the VFAQ again, while there isn't a specific section on "how to hook up the cables", there's plenty of photos and info in the "shifter" section.

Good luck! :thumb:

P.S. If you're doing work on that scale (trans swap), you REALLY should have a factory service manual. Buy the manual CD on ebay...and don't even think about complaining about the price, they're dirt cheap. It will be the best tool you ever purchase for working on your DSM.
