Saskatoon,
i have a 91 laser rs turbo, which a 3"turboback exhaust, and autometer boost gauge. Im just wondering if anyone could tell me of some simple mods to increase horsepower, and just general performance.

also i have a question about my turbo, i believe its a stock turbo, and is set to boost 15psi, but with the addition of the 3" exhaust it is now boosting around 18psi. other threads have said that your car should not boost over 16psi with a stock fuel system, im just wondering if its safe to be boosting 18psi?

This Page may just happen to become your best friend for referring to what to 'mod' next...
Here

saying your boosting at 15psi...You have a Manual Boost Controller installed? Plus the 3"turbo back also happens to give people boost creep. From what I've read, porting your turbo and o2 housing can cure 99% of this....Also buying the Evo3 exhaust manifold, and o2 housing should help with curing as well as increasing performance!

Edit: To make sure you 'know' what turbo you have you can look in the engine bay at the turbo, and see what it says on it, stock turbo is TD05H.

I was going to say a manual boost controller but if you turned the boost up already it sounds like you already have one. Have you done all the free mods?

thanks for the link crazym, but im not sure whether or not i have a MBC, all i know is that is what i was told it boosts, and the guy said he was going to have to turn it down because the boost was getting higher with the new exhaust, the new boost being 18psi. Also im not really wanting/feeling the need to fix the "boost creep" im just wondering whether or not this is a safe boosting level, when running a stock fuel system

Ok, well im guessing since he said 'turn down' you have a boost controller of some sorts under your hood. If you want take some pics and load them up on here, or email or something to try and locate it.

As to safety...Running 18psi on stock fuel will most likely, actually positive you will be running Lean....which in turn is bad and you could end up with detination and frying some internals... :notgood:

lean means you car is not supplying enough fuel for the amount of air your engine is taking in. The stock fuel system isn't really set-up to run anything higher than 16 PSI

running lean is essentialy your car not running at it's desired A\f(Air to Fuel Ratio) which i believe is 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel... Which causes the detination, and stuff like that I explained before.

To cause these problems you should first...Turn down the boost, might as well take the easy steps to stay 'safer'. To eliminate your problem, or atleast most of it, you will need to do the porting that I talked about earlier, or upgrade to the EVO3 Manifold\o2 housing.

if you look under your manifold that little black tube looking thing sitting on top of you radiator fan is your MBC. use that to lower your boost to about 12 PSI as this is close to factory settings. Before you do anything for performance do maintainance first

I would highly reccomend doing extensive research on this site before touching you car. You'd be suprised how easy it is to mess cars up

That looks like just wiring to me, as well it has No hoses going towards the WG actuator, or The nipple on the J Pipe....

I stand corrected. This is what happens when its almost midnite and your half asleep, you start to see things:p

These are just some things I thought of off the top of my head that you might want to take a look at. The first link explains the boost creep that was mentioned earlier, The second is a good primer on turbo's in general ( this one's a lot of reading but it does have some humorous things in it, hopefully you're smarter than 14.5 drift, LOL) The third is a maintainance schedule that should be followed religiously and the forth is just a list of acronyms that you're going to be coming across while you research on this site ( it makes life alot easier )

And by the way your 91 is a 90. It does not mean a hill of beans until you start going after some parts that are 90 specific.

Great find on the glossary neoviper!! :thumb: I bookmarked that as well!

Too bad I didn't find it till after I knew all the abbreviations from learning it the HARD WAY!:p Now I make sure to give it to everyone just starting out

thanks for everything you guys, but im still wondering one thing, is there a MBC on the car, if so where is it? LOL

From what I can see from the engine..I cannot see that there is one hooked up anywhere....Only other suggestion I have is...call the previous owner and ask him If there is one, and if there is, where it is located.

But, 15Psi is not an outrageous number IF 1) The boost restrictor was removed from the 'stock boost controller' (if thats not the actual name it has slipped my mind) which can raise the boost 1-2 PSI, putting your car at roughly 12-13 PSI boost 'stock'. and Not sure if the 3" turbo back exhaust can raise the boost too 15psi or not....

Also look into how your Boost gauge is installed...make sure it is Tee'd off to an accurate boost source.

i believe the word your looking for is BCS? anyways thanks alot.
also it was said that i should do maintenance to the car, but im wondering what should be done, i've replaced the timing belt, power steering line, there was a leak on the front of the engine that was fixed(old seals, or gaskets or something), also had the powersteering belt done, and its been inspected, and they said that pretty much covered it up,oh and a outter cv boot was replaced

When you accelerate hard does the boost gauge hit 15 PSI and than slowly rise to 18 or does it hit 18 PSI than settle back down to 15?

Thats exactly the one I am looking for!

Belts
Water Pump(most people do anytime they change time belt, as timing belt has to come off to do it)
Fluids
Timing
Plugs\wires

Pretty much the typical stuff. Seeing as you have had it inspected...and passed im assuming, then most things SHOULD be fine...

EDIT: One thing I would encourage you doing is putting the Cam Gear\Timing Belt cover back on(if you took it off) If you didn't grab one from an Auto Wrecker...Anything get caught in there while the engine is running, could make your timing belt slip, and then completely mess up your engine head...Done it!
