We just installed a 2G exhaust mani. and while we were taking it all apart discovered that the exhaust side of the turbo was cracked on both the collector and waste gate port. We replaced the exhaust side with an un-cracked one and reinstalled everything. Note: We did not do anything to the compressor side; we just replaced the hot side. An FMIC was part of the overall install but I doubt that it has anything to do with the problem that we are having now.
The problem is that there is oil and I mean a lot of oil in both the lower I/C pipe and the exhaust, enough oil for it to pour out when we took the J-pipe off and enough for it to reach the exhaust tip, coating the outer rim. There is white and blue smoke coming from the tail pipe when we pull it out of any gear. We have boost leaks but right now I could care less to be honest and a compression check is due as soon as I can find the time. Just to mention we have not boosted hard at all reaching at most 8 psi which was done right after the install was finished, revealing the oil problem by smoking. We just did an oil change and no coolant was present in the oil. We also removed the oil return line to check for clogs and none were found. There is literally no shaft play and none of the lines to or from the turbo are kinked or broken. For shits and giggles we replaced the PCV but no change with the oil problem.
Can I assume that we did something to the seals in the turbo during the install that would cause them to blow so completely and if so is the turbo salvageable. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

It does not smoke when driving it regular or even when I stomp on it. When I do stomp on it pulls like a raped ape and it only smokes when I take it out of gear and the engine idles. It will lay down a smoke screen and the stop.

Have you done any modifications to the crankcase breather line between the top of the engine to the intake directly before the turbo inlet? This is a common problem under high-revs and boost where oil feeds back into the inlet through that line. Do you notice any oil on the inlet side?

It could be that the seals were previously blown and with the increased pressure on the turbine side (exhaust/hot side) from the replaced housing is just now showing.

When you stated there is "no" shaft play while the engine is off, this could be a problem. There should be some side-to-side play when there is no oil on the bearings while the engine is off. If there is no play, then you may have a return problem.

I suggest draining all the oil, removing the oil return line, and inspecting for blockage. Old oil may have burned up and clogged the line. If this is the case, the oil will have no place to go except through your intake piping.

Just remember, if there is currently oil in all your piping, it will take some time to remove it. Even if you fix the problem, you will likely still get smoke for some time unless you clean EVERYTHING.

Well lets just say that the crankcase hose is connected at the valve cover but not to the intake snorkel :shhh: We just pulled the oil return line yesterday and it is as clear as a whistle. We also checked the turbo and oil pan for obstructions but nothing is there, not even the slightest block. I wonder if during the install we jacked the seals up by boost leak testing this old ass turbo to 20 PSI.

Edit: We did replace the PCV too.
