hey yall, im tryin to get a 97 gst but it doesnt have a cat on the exhaust. will i be able to pass emissions? the car is not throwing any codes b/c the owner turned them off.

Will it pass emissions maybe, probably not. Is it illegal yes but a lot of guys do it. Tell the guy to turn the CELs (Check Engine Lights) that he turned off back on then you can see whats wrong. Unless you are getting a good deal or know what you are looking for, I would look out.

No. In a state with emissions testing, you will not pass for the simple reason that you don't have a catalytic converter.

the guy only turned off the codes for the o2 sensor ### that will trip the cel b/c there is no cat. i thought that if there are no codes thrown, then you will pass

emissions only test codes that are emissions related such as o2 sensors. Also now a days, most states with emissions just use a scanner to see if the car is throwing any emission related codes rather than actually testing your exhaust's carbon density. You might want to find out about these things specifically in whichever state you are in.

I assume by no cat you're running a test pipe and an open end exhaust. Either way there is no way you're going to pass smog. It is illegal in every state.

"SMOG" does not exist in every state. As to passing in WA they are only looking for a "readiness" test meaning all emissions systems are intact and functioning properly. There are ways to make these codes appear different than they are however I havent seen software of that exact nature for the Mitsu as of yet. It is possible you will pass however unlikey. The best way to really test is go to a Schucks/Napa/Autozone or wherever you can borrow an OBDII scanner with Emissions readiness capabilites (yellow/green and red lights) If the scanner lights up green you will pass the "readiness" test but if you are in a state with "SMOG" you will definitely fail the visual inspection.:notgood:

I am in a similar situation but I have the sniffer to work with :thumb:

See the date? I think the OP has already delt with this.

With that being said, yes it could pass or no it won't pass. It really depends on your state & the type of emissions testing they do, as well as how through the tech is. You'd have to get more info on how exactly they test in your area to get a proper answer.
