I am rebuilding my shortblock with stock rods and wesico pistons. I was thinking of using arp headstuds but thats it. I want a low budget shortblock so i dont want to go crazy stock rods will do. But is there any suggestions you might have as far as arp main studs or anything else.

ARP headstuds and Comestic head gasket is a must. And as far as rest of the shortblock, I don't know what your budget is or what kind of power you want but having Wesico pistons and stock rods isn't going to do much. You can get the same amount of power out of a complete stock shortblock. You might well throw an extra $270 and get Eagle H-Rods with the Wesico pistons.

He is right. Your not going to be able to make as much power as those pistons can handle with stock rods. Upgrade the rods too.

1G DSM was right to say that your goals make a big difference in what components you choose. I disagree with him about not being able to make much power with the stock rods, however.

It's a little old, but see if you can get a back issue of Sport Compact Car - Sep. '05 "Budget Bad Boys". There is a 1G AWD Talon on the cover dynoed @ 372HP & 391 Lb/Ft of torque to the wheels using the stock 1G rod, 2G piston combination. Aside from that, the motor is, internally, completely stock. Even if you assume only a 10% loss to friction, heat and other power eaters (a very generous assumption of efficiency for any motor), he'd still be making over 400HP @ the flywheel - more than double the stock rating. That's a strong claim - period. Considering most engines "eat" closer to 15%-25% of flywheel rated power, he's probably closer to 450HP+.

Personally, I do recommend the ARP head studs, and main studs. Also, a metal Cometic head gasket wouldn't hurt. They key is how well all of the parts are put together and work together, and how easy you make it for your engine to make power. Your Wiseco pistons should be fine (and might save you a little weight to boot!)

Sorry for the long post. Good luck with your build!

finnie3d, yeah upgrading only the pistons could give power but you have to consider that changing to a higher compression on a completely stock 10+ year shortblock is pushing it way over that limit.

My advise to xXRedDevilXx go checkout the TECH upgrade sequence, i.e. exhaust, downpipe, manifold, turbo, fuel systems, etc... first. And if the power isn't enough for you then start the shortblock. Heading straight for the shortblock and doing none of those things is not going to give power.

You just proved 1gdsm correct. 1g rods and 2g pistons will make good power like you stated and so can 1g pistons. Installing wisecos on stock rods is not worth the money. If you want to start using the wisecos to there potential, and I know I would if I bought them, you will be risking breaking the stock rod.

So even if you had the wisecos you would not beable to make more power than a stock shortblock setup. OEM pistons and 1g rods are good for 400-500whp.

well the reason why i was going with after market pistons is because the fit with the stock rods and for the most part I might as well. I dont want to go eagle rods because my goals for this motor is nothing to brag about 300whp is just fine for me. I have another long block I'm gonna build. That one I'm gonna have all the goodies but this one is just a street motor to get around and have a little fun with nothing big. Thanks for all your help main studs and head studs as well as a cometic head gasket is what ill go with. Would you recommend new rod bolts? Also when the motor is out anything else to do? I know the balance shaft removal and egr block off plate but anything else that could help?

Also I wanted a little higher compression I would do the 2g pistons I just don't like the machining to the rods, I'd rather avoid that. So the 1g pistons would work just as well as wiseco 9to1 comp pistons?

if your goals are 300whp. i think yould be fine. you can get those numbers with bolt ons. i do see where your coming from tho. might as well upgrade while your in there. think of this tho. if you upgrade your rods. more power will be that much easier. as everyone knows... once you get the itch its hard to stop... but if you really dont plan on breaking 400, save the $ for bolt ons and go for the 2G piston set-up.
