I recently got a mildly modified 1991 Talon TSi AWD and let a friend drive it today, he missed 4th and went from 3rd to 2nd at around 50-55mph. It was revved up for around a second before he shifted back into 3rd. The car pulls fine and sounds normal for the most part, but if I pop the hood it has a slight ticking at idle which may or may not have been there before. I don't have the money right now for a compression test or leak down test, so I was hoping to get some opinions on whether that could have bent the rods or something because I don't know all that much about cars.

A slight tick is normal on a 4g63 motor. It's the lifters. It will sound like it's coming from under the valve cover.

If it's worse than slight, then it would be more of a knock/soft thud on the bottom end of the motor.

Chance are, if it runs OK, then nothing bad happened. Like floating a valve. You'd definitely know that.

if you were full up on oil and all your fluids, I highly doubt that something has happened to the head from this one time accidental shift. Tell him to learn how to drive, but hes a good freind for telling you that he miss-shifted.

Our cars sound like sewing machines at idle, for the most part. Even with the 3G revised lifters, there's really no way to cure that.

Years ago I had a Nova with a Pontiac 455 in it, One day out at the track as the trannie shifed into second it shered the teeth off the pinion gear:notgood: Needless to say the revs went to the moon. Oll dummie here left out the revlimiter chip:sosad:

Long story short I put about 10K more on the engine before I tore it down. Drive it a few miles then pull the oil filter and cut it open to see if it made any metal. If clean run it if it made metal.

Good luck.
