okay, I have a 91 FWD TSi. The other week it started acting up, came to find out I need to replace the idle control valve and the idle screw was loose.. also checked the ecu, and the capacitor was leaking..

I need to get a new one. Can anyone tell me what years I can use, codes, etc?

I know I stopped posting, but I never told you guys what happened.. I currently have an ECU, borrowing.. Honestly I don't remember at the moment what year and such it is.. Just wanted to say that it's been fine.

I did do something stupid the other day.. I have a radar detector hooked up and the wire runs under the dash on top of the steering column, to the edge of the window by the pillar. Well I was running my finger along it (boredom while driving).. And I shocked myself where the ignition wires are ( I have a turbo timer hooked up).. It shocked me, and the car shut off.. battery and all. The far left fuse from the battery box, yeah.. gone. Replaced it and what not, but there was a green wire cut that hit a ground where I shocked my...
Be sure to replace the o-ring on the Idle screw (BISS screw) to prevent boost leaks. Lube it and the ISC o-ring with a clear silicone before reinstalling.

Instead of just getting a new ECU, you could send yours out for repairs, depending on how bad the damge is this could be a cheaper option.

You can use an ECU out of a 91-94 Manual Turbo car. AWD or FWD.

It will be easier to use a 91-93 Manual Turbo ECU. In 94 all of them use the California EGR hardware and you may get a CEL on an earlier Federal car.

If your ECU is too far gone and you need to replace it, try these guys in the link below. I bought an EPROM one that was rebuilt with new capacitors, tested, and had a socket already soldered in. They were pretty helpful and the prices weren't bad at all. Nicest of all, they are in Chicago so they got it to me pretty quick.

Alright. I replaced it with a 90 ECU and switched pins and replaced caps about a month ago. It's back, again.

Cleaned the IAC, yet have the IAC unplugged, car is at steady 900RPMs, did have idle surge, not anymore, or at least at the moment.

Car suddenly dies while driving, not to mention me holding back traffic for half a mile, haha.. And starts when cold. Obviously it's the ECU.

So I know I need an ECU, but could there be a possibility of something making the ECU burn the way it is? Just curious because 2 in 2 months seems a bit ridiculous..

Sorry to go a bit offtopic, but aren't there a slight change in the timing curves between the awd and the fwd ecu? As I recall, there was, but please correct me if wrong.

I dont recall there being a timing curve in the ECU's I thought there was a difference in the 90's ecus then 91-94 ecu's.

Jessica, I am going to the junkyard here within a couple days, Ill look out for an ecu for you. Call me if you still need it boo.

This is the first time you have mentioned burning anything. If that's the case you have to show us some pictures of the damage.

The capacitors leak on all of them unless you replace them before they can. Once they have leaked there can be more work involved that just replacing the capacitors and even the quality of that work has a lot to do with how long they last.

Well, it all of a sudden dies while cruising.. When it's cold, it will start fine. When it's warm, after dieing, it won't start.
So there is nothing actually burnt up as far as you know.
Just that you have gone through two of them of unknown or questionable condition and wonder why.

It also not clear if the ISC is connected or not when your driving the car or how long you have to wait before the car runs again after it gets warm.

When your having the problem does the CEL turn on and then go off when you cycle the ignition from off to on? Or does it not go on at all or stay on and not go off.

In addition to bad ISC ECU death is more often linked to Power Steering Fluid leaks on Alternator, which kills Voltage regulator - Which fails to HIGH Voltage - Which will COOK as many ECU's as you can buy.

I guess I just thought this was ridiculously stupid of me to do, yet quite funny.. Kinda wondering why or what that green wire is from/for??
