Please help with left front driveshaft

I am in the middle of ripping out the engine in a 91 GSX junker car than I am stealing the crank out of for my car...which needs a new crank :cry:. Everything went great except my first problem occured which was only a ball joint I had to cut the boot off of. Then I ran into this problem a little worse. i can't get the two bolts out of the bracket that hold the driveshaft in place!! its been over an hour and with jammed knuckles...i'm frustrated... I have removed the exhaust for more room to work...had to anyways...but I really don't know what to do. I was thinking that by taking off my transfer case and dropping the main driveshaft..which I need to do anyways... I was hoping to be bale to get my 30" breaker bar on there and break it loose. but before i got that carried away in frustration, I came to my beloved site of answers. Please help me get this off...i'm willing to try what I can with my tools. TIA!!!!!!
 
Try socking them with PB Blast and then try again in a few minutes. Just drop the transfer case now, you have all the room you need. your goin to have to anyways to drop the oil pan, right. GL
 
well I am actually pulling the entire motor out. i might also need a rod...but i'm trying not to think about it. but ok so i had the right idea about dropping the transfer case. i've already soaked them with WD-40. Bowman 7-77, and zep. but nothing seems to be working. unfortunatly i don't have and air tools and don't really want to spend 300 bucks on a compressor and nice air tools set even though i have drooling over them the last few days. Thats why i was bringing up the whole breaker bar thing.
 
Well I can say from experience that you really dont need air tools at all, except for breaking loose those pesky flywheel bolts! Its just easier! If you follow proper torque specs you really shouldnt have a problem unless its rusted that bad! Thats why I suggested PB blast. If you can get a braker bar in there try it, but please dont snap the bolt head off!!!!! WD-40 sucks for pentitrating tuff bolts!!!
 
haha it was my last resort penitration. i tried everything else. it ended up getting too late to finish. so tomorrow... finishing the transfer case and dropping it...and then getting that breaker bar in there. thanks for the advice about the pb blast. have to get some.... :D
 
Use the cheater method by interlocking two wrenches. Put the hand your not using on the face of the bolt, push down to keep from misaligning the wrench and push real hard with your power hand.

Remember greater leverage gets you greater force.

That was the intention of my giant breaker bar. But I am curious. How can I accomplish the cheater method. I have never done it...or seen it. Oh and off topic.... why am I a new member....and a lurker?? Like since when did I become a lurker? How do you become a lurker...WTF... well anyways, thanks again haha.
 
All newbies are lurkers now, I guess. The cheater method is putting the box end of a wrench on the bolt head or nut. Then take another wrench and fit the box end in between the open end of the other wrench. Get it to finda lock itself and push or pull hard as hell!
 
Haha. Thats awesome. Well once I dropped the transfer case I had no problems getting it off with the 30" breaker bar I had. Now I just have a few more things to take care of. I spent a good hour and a half working on the top side afterwards. The last few things are(I hope):
-Power cable to starter,
-Unbolt compressor
-Any remaining hoses or grounds.

After that, I hope I am home free to remove the engine...and then take off the transmission, and put the block on an engine stand. Yay!!

Now that I think about it, Where is the best place to lift the engine and transmission from?

The cheater method is using a air ratchet. When I say cheater, I mean smarter.

The lift points are the bracket above the right side of the exhaust manifold/power steering and the intake manifold brace. I'll see if I can find a picture.

Well in post #3 he said he doesnt have any air tools.

Good to here that you got it and didnt snap the bolts off!!! As far as pulling points, I use the 3 point method. The bracket on the exhuast side, then if you look on the IM, the top studs on each side of the IM are bigger then the rest. Unbolt them and just slip the chain link over and put the nut back on.

I understand your point laserspeeddemon. Air ratchet would definitely be the correct way to go about removeing the bolts. I unfortunately don't have access to any. The only thing I had available was the breaker bar.

I do appreciate the pictures very much!! It really helps. Now last night, when I was about done for the night, I was looking at the compressor housing. I just have to remove the 4 bolts that hold it onto the block? And unless I am mistaken, I don't believe i'm going to be able to lift the engine straight out. I am going to have to angle and maneuver it around correct?
