What does it mean when they say the short shifter is counter balanced? I am looking into just making my own, as I have a machine shop as my playground! In what respect is the shifter counter-balanced? Thanks.

Marketing bullshit. Shifters don't need "counter balancing". Counter against what? Random molecular migration? Val Allen belt loops?
2Gs have a hammerhead on the shifter which some call a counter balance, but like so many odd things on 2Gs, they're just to make the car more ladylike, and make sure the girls don't think the car feels too match-o for them to be driving, because otherwise they're just so cute.
