That's right, the CPS, or cam position sensor. And now I'm super paranoid. I've read enough on crankwalk that it scares me to death. I constantly check the engine and hear it for the inevitable tick-tick-tick. I actually did hear it about a month ago but I didn't know what to make of it. It added fuel to the nonlit fire. Now with the code, the spark has been provided and I'm completely panicking. Should I take the car ASAP to Satan and tell them to check my crankshaft? Hell I feel like going over there and telling them to give me a new crankshaft regardless whether or not it is walking. I wouldn't be surprised if it is since the car has reached 70k miles. :cry: Way to put this on somebody that loves his car to death and has no idea where to begin a rebuild.
 
Settle down - P0340 is the CAS (camshaft angle sensor) not the CPS (crankshaft position sensor). Crankwalk can destroy the CPS (P0335) but not the CAS. First check the CAS connector to see if it's clean and secure before replacing it. BTW, a new crankshaft installation would cost you $1000's.
 
I read that crankwalk destroys the CAS? Are you sure you didn't mix the two codes up? Autozone used their OBD reader and it pulled 0340 - CPS. The two terms are used so interchangably I don't know which is which.
 
Let’s hope it’s the cam angle sensor... I think yours is the one that’s easy to get to. It’s in the same place as the 1g. Unlike mine which is hidden behind the timing cover :(. IF it was crankwalk, I think you would know for sure by now. Especially if it took out a sensor. So I think you’re safe.

Yes I'm sure. It's very confusing because so many people use the terms interchangeably: Cam Angle Sensor, Crank Angle Sensor, Cam Position Sensor, Crank Position Sensor! :confused: And the 1g only has a Cam Angle Sensor but within it there is a Crank Angle Sensor and a TDC sensor! OMG So many 1g people say they have a Crank Angle Sensor while others say they have a Cam Angle Sensor both of which are CAS! ROFL Even Mitsubishi calls both 2g sensors a CPS (one is Crank Position Sensor, other is Cam Position Sensor). LOL And then there's the 2g's which have a 6 bolt in them with a 1g CAS but wiring to fake out the CPS......well, let's not even go there for this discussion. :cry: Oh, and of course, you also have all the aftermarket manuals which each like to call them different things. :rolleyes:

So Autozone is right, it is a CPS according to Mitsubishi terminology but the P0340 identifies it as Cam Position Sensor again according to Mitsubishi terminology.

Here on DSMTuners we try to minimize this confusion by calling CAS the Cam Angle Sensor (whether it's on a 1g or 2g and yes they are different) which is the one on the camshaft, and CPS the Crank Position Sensor (only on 2g) which is the one on the crankshaft sprocket. Most people here use this definition but there are always some that don't (especially newbies or ones using a manual/shop that calls it differently). So you have to understand this and read between the lines accordingly. If it's unclear just ask.

Sometimes it will throw out a completely random code that won’t return. Like a fluke. But if that works, it’s cheaper than paying almost 100 bucks for a cam sensor!

She runs perfectly fine. Just slightly rich I think. It's been raining a lot these past days and I know people suggest when cleaning your engine bay to cover up the CAS to prevent moisture from getting on it. I'm guessing the moisture from the rain fried it possibly. The connection to it is fine. Solid. I couldn't get it off myself. I can't do anything to the car till tomorrow night since I don't have my tools with me. I'm going to try to pull it out to see if anything is wrong with it.
