Hey guys i'm posting for my buddy. He has a 95 GST FWD. His reverse has grinded ever since he has owned the car... but thats not the problem just a tidbit of info. Anyways, He noticed that 5th gear would not stay in gear unless he held it in gear. It would shift into gear fine but just pop out under any stress. He read somewhere on a forum or VFAQ that there are a couple bolts that may work themselves loose that would cause this problem. He took off the transmission cover to discover these bolts were finger tight. After tightening them to spec he also noticed that the 5th gear syncro and a mangled snap ring looking piece of metal was laying there. He removed the pieces and put the car back together, Filled transmission fluid and went for a drive. Now the car feels like the brakes are being held at all times. The transmission feels like it is holding the car back. It shifts through all the gears fine now though and stays in 5th without a problem, reverse still grinds like usual. Any thoughts?

I'm assuming he replaced the retaining ring and wave washer? The mangled snap ring your talking about sounds like these parts. If it's the same setup as a 1g trans there should be three keys and a spring keeper holding them in place. The wave washer goes on the cover side around the conical piece. The grinding reverse is probably just a sychro.
