so today i installed a new water pump... which is kinda making me want to kick my own ass for not having it changed with the timing belt that lead to a rebuilt head. anyways along the way i came across a few issues:

busted BS belt. as soon as i enountered this little surprise i did a quick search and found that -
1 i am lucky for it not getting tangled in the gears and throwing off the timing belt which would have lead me to once again rebuild my head
2 and PLEASE correct me if im wrong, but other than more vibration, this has no side affects since the rear is gear driven by the oil pump. also SOME members had cut the BS belt as an alternative to a BS removal kit with little or no ill side affects.
3 i should have changed it when i had my timing belt/head rebuild

timing belt must come off for the water pump to be removed. well for the most part. the auto-tensioner bearing is in the way of the rear bolt on the water pump. i zip tied the belt on a couple part to the gears so that it wouldnt move. but when i finished there was still slack in the T-Belt.

so i guess my question is there anyway i could have missed something that would cause this?

i had NOT changed out the auto tensioner or bearing when i had the timing belt replaced... so now i went ahead and ordered it along with a new bearing from slowboyracing in hope that it will fix this problem. am i on the right track?

from past experience of tearing into anything that creates any sort of slack in the timing belt, it is ALWAYS best to completely reset the timing just to be on the safe side. whether its swapping cams, tensioners, water pump...always redo the timing! if by chance it skipped a tooth on any of the 4 gears, your timing is shot. Besides setting timing is over rated and is really quite easy! theres tons of sites out there on setting it including setting the appropriate tension in the belt (very important!). go to vfaq.com and read over the procedure there.

as for the balance shaft belt, yes you are very lucky!!! i've seen guys demolish their entire motor from a busted belt. and since it didn't get tangled then it shouldnt have caused any damage. that particular shaft only limits vibration and will not cause any performance problems

lucky man, I would just take off the belt, do a balance shaft elimination kit and then order a new belt since you are doing everything else and they arent that much. Also, have you considered cams because nows the time. It sounds dumb but after doing my timing belt 4 times in one weekend I got pretty sick of it... first just installing the head, then having to do a new tensioner since mine gave out, then a great deal on cams, and then noticing that my buddy who helped with the cam swap installed a cam upside down:mad: oh well lesson learned...

the timing belt itself along with "upgraded"/fresh head has less than 10k on it. the t-belt is in perfectly fine shape.
as for the BS elim kit, well it is eliminated in a sense, not the right way to do it but it is what it is. itll do for now. later maybe next tbelt change LOL.
+ i dont have time to wait around for parts, nor dor i have the $ to buy. this car is my DD. im sweating having it down for this long.
if i do happen to come across a good deal later on... i have a good cheap mechanic on hand. (a good example : complete head removal install and dismantle for new valves and lifters, timing belt job, not to mention i gave em the car with most of the pieces in the trunk.... and it cost me 200$ + parts. i just skimped out on what i needed to get what i wanted.
lesson learned there... i got ss valves n such instead of a water pump n auto tensioner... which is why im at where im at now. lesson learned the hard way.
