I am planning on rebuilding my 16g and was wondering how hard it would be to try and complete it myself. I have heard that the compression wheel has to be rebalanced. Is that expensive and or necessary? What else is required to rebuild it besides tearing it apart and replacing parts?

you can buy new cartridges, swap them out, if you feel like it is too much of a hassle

Yeah it definitely needs to be balanced.. forcedperformance.com does a pretty damn good job on rebuilds and it's a reasonable price check it out..

Vfaq has a step-by-step of a 14b rebuild and the 16g is almost identical. Don't be fooled; it's not as easy as it looks. The hardest part is getting out the tiny little c-clips in the back of the center section that hold the middle journal bearing in. You have to have the right tools for that. Nothing specific, but anything that works. I use steel knitting needles ahahaha!

Seriously though. If you do one step wrong and you go to put it back together it's gonna let you know. Either the compressor nut gets way too tight and the wheels won't turn correctly, or it just won't go into place and you can't get the larger c-clips back on.

Yes, a dynamic balance is a really important step. Some shops claim you can get away with just using the "scribe" technique and that if you don't have any damage to the wheels then you can get away without a true balance, but IMO it's not worth the risk especially if you're going to be running the turbo hard. Do it once, do it right.

1.) Research thoroughly what you need to do
2.) Buy td05h 16g rebuild kit (different than 14b) $120 shipped
3.) Send it to FP, G-Pop, Blaast, etc for a dynamic balance $100 when it's all said and done
4.) Bolt it on and hope she holds

PM me if you need any help. I've worked in a diesel shop that deals with a bunch of turbos and I've rebuilt a few myself. All worked perfect and still do. Good luck.
