why am i losing electric power when i acc. ?

alright today on my way home from work.. i noticed all my lights were dimming as i gave it gas.. than when i let off the gas the lights got brighter.. ive noticed before that my volts go to 11 or 12 when i accelerate and than back up to 14 when i let off .. does anyone have any ideas ??

I would guess your alternator belt is slipping or your alternator is going bad. Check the belt first and if its ok then look into getting a new alternator.

Also check the harmonic balancer. Most likely is that your alternator's shot, though. The balancer seldom dies quietly.

I just got done with a similar problem. If I was accelerating and turned on my brights the radio would shut off and some other odd stuff. And when I hit the brakes the lights would dim.

Go to advanced auto and get the free battery and alternator test. They told me my starter was drawing something like a 120 volts and that it was bad. He said its a small chance it could be corosion on the connections. So me being the cheap person I am try that first and after taking some sand paper to the connections on the battery,alternator, and starter where it looked bad it solved the problem of dimming and shutting things off.

Then I got a test done and everything was good. It's worth a try, I think a starter on his computer was like 200+ dollars!

Before you go through the labor of taking your alt out, I would recommend two things, check your connections to your alternator, and check for corrosion with all associated wires. While I am 99% sure your voltage issues are being caused by your voltage regulator going out, it never hurts to check.

That seems to happen to me when I brake harder than normal. The radio will kind of cut in and out. I never worried about it though.

Yeah sounds like a connection. Take some sand paper and lightly rub away the corrosion. After this no more radio cutting out and stuff.

Possibly the belt is slipping, if not start checking your connections. ( Alt, Grounds, Battery Cables, etc )
