coke and battery .... ?

I use hot water and it works just fine. And doesn't an excessive amount of "white stuff" indicate alternator charging problems?

:talon:

The white stuff on t op of the battery is the product of dried acid = salt.
The coke dissolves it and so does water...
The white stuff is caused by leaky batteries, and bad contact from terminals.
In mechanic terms, we call this corrosion (the bulldog) because if you don't resolve it soon enough It will bite you back.
Corrosion can get into your main positive wire and consequently give you starting and chraging problems.

You can also find red and green treated washers at most any autoparts store or even walmart. They are treated with an anti-corrosion chemical. These slip over the battery posts. They will help keep it from building up after you have cleaned them.

I have the gold/brass terminals, and just went to check it... Corrosion covered the clamp bolt, but left the terminal and post alone entirely. And yes, a light spray of watered down (or pure) coke will make sure the corrosion doesn't come back, too. Didn't bother to do it after relocating the battery, now I get to clean it up and do it right. :b

Coke does work. However, I prefer a good automotive battery cleaner and sealer as you still have the sticky stuff to contend with.

Good Luck
