o2 housing and porting

i'm a little confused on something. i want a new o2housing and it's going to be an evo III i want 3" turbo back so i was told this flowed well now my question is if i don't get a 3" down pipe for awhile and stay with my stock one will it work with the stock then later can i just bolt the new 3" dp on and would i have to port the o2 housing or would it be fine left as it is?
