St. Catharines,
ok so yesterday my 1997 eagle talon tsi auto tranny went. So now i have to make a decision find a 5speed and swap it or rebuild the tranny. My question is with the tranny properly modded from ipt transmission will it be just as fast as a 5 speed? Im talking about rebuilding my self with the performance rebuild kit, putting in shift kit black spring, custom high stall torque converter, lsd, tranny cooler? And will it just get screwed again from break torquing? Like i don't want to spend all this money and i break torque it acouple times and boom their goes the tranny. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

A built auto will be faster than a 5-speed anyday. If you have the money build up the auto.

If you can build it properly, go for the built automatic for sure. I saw one in the classifieds that was tempting, had a built auto good for 9's for $2300 and a billet torque converter for $800

Stay away from the auto's I mean unless you are just quartermile racing why drive around with an auto talon???? where is the fun in that

I've driven both auto and manual cars, I could care less which I have as long as the auto tranny isn't gimped or anything. In stop and go traffic, I thank god I went with an auto. Also my car will ultimately turn into a track whore when the original engine goes and I get a built one, so auto tranny consistency :thumb:

I love my auto tranny. It blew but then I rebuilt it with the IPT shift kit(black spring), end clutch kit, rebuild kit, and one of their bigger tranny coolers and Its amazing. I love it.:rocks: Like said before if you have the money just rebuild it.

I have a 5 speed DSM and a GTI DSG and if the automatic of the DSM were anything close to the DSG then I would say yes rebuild it but I have yet to see an automatic DSM have the quickness that is on my DSG tranny..just my 2 cents

In my option the auto is the way to go, especially if you drag race, i have a set up that will hold me deep deep deep into the nines that cost me less then a clutch i would need to get deep into the nines.

yea im going to rebuild the transmission and put high stall torque converter, shift kit, cooler, new pump and lsd.

a set of line locks will also help make the car alot more fun to drive as well, they a pretty cheep to since all of the muscle car guys use them

driving a 5-speed is just more of a pleasure than an auto and I am live in the traffic capital of the world. as stated a fully built auto will outperform an mtx

well that is kinda of general don't you think? It has a lot to do with what and how you are comparing it to; automatics would probably work for some things including day to day driving but some applications it will no work so well; like rally racing or drifting even roadracing. I think you are half right it depends on who's driving and what you are doing with your car overall it is persoanl preference and proven track times to see what is the best for that particular activity race or cruise

well the auto will be faster if bulit properly. i am in the process of that rite now, full ipt rebulid kit, kiggly front clutch drum, ipt valve body, billet tq. it will rip a five speed apart but belive me its quite pricey LOL. i agree five speeds are way more fun to drive but doin the swap is alot of headach unless you have a donor car. but hey a bulit auto with a rachet shifter mmmm fun. oh ya and brake boosting will make your trans life shorter its just what happpens but just get the biggest cooler you can and frequent fluid changes, depending on how much your gonna brake boost.

I'm surprised there isn't a huge manual vs. auto argument yet. As stated before it all comes down to personal preference and the OP has already made up his mind. Keep us updated on your rebuild and don't forget to post photos!
