Hello All,

Can i perform the leakdown test without the timing belt attaches to the engine. The reason i ask this question is because the car is a 2.4L n/t that has a broken timing belt and i want to know whether i have any bent valves

Thanks

You really want the timing belt on to make sure that with the motor in time the valve's are sealing correctly but you can just get them set so they aren't on any of the valve springs to see if the valve's are seated correctly.

Right now the head doesn't align with the mark (1-3 teeth away) as well as the oil pump and the crank pulley. So it's safe for me to rotate the head and the crank separately so they all align to the appropriate marking ?

Take valve cover off and remove cam caps bolts lift cams up then do leak down test. May sound like alot to do but it dont take that long

Look under new posts and click on stupid valve cover link, there is pic of the valve cover off and you can see the cam cap bolts there is 20 of them. If you take them off removing bolts evenly {keep them in order ,not hard because there numbered and they have an arrow] that will lift the cams and shut valves so you can do a leak down test. If your belt broke you most likely have bent valves.Listen for air either comming out intake or exaust. If by very slight chance it passes you can put the crank at TDC line up you cam marks before you install cam caps. Install cam caps form center out on each cam sug down evenly {don just tighten one down all the way] I know this sounds hard but its not. should take about 20 to 30min for the test. The only way do leak down with out installing belt {takes longer]

the link is for 2.0 but use it for ref,if you do have bent valves having a 2.4 you need to remove cams anyway to acc.. head bolts
