Hi im looking into buying a tsi talon awd but not sure on a 1g or 2g, i like both body styles but dont know much about the motors. can anyone help me? whats r the better things about the 2g than the 1g? thanks

2g looks better...
2g has better mass air sensor and exhaust manifold...
2g has a more agile stock suspension.... um....2g looks better... ( Thats really all I can think of... )
Oh, 2g's speedo goes up to 170 instead of the 1gs 145 ( But who cares LOL. )

Buttt there are a lot of things I can say that the 1g has a lot better than the 2g.... Not to sound biased or anything...

The 1G turbo cars were rated at 195 horsepower, while the 2G turbo cars were rated at 210 horsepower. However, many people the world over would rather have the 1G's engine than it's 2G counterpart (some people consider it stronger).

The 2Gs are OBD2, which can be your friend or your worst enemy. Also they have, what we call, a 7-bolt crankshaft. A 7-bolt is suceptable to the dreaded crankwalk, where the crankshaft ends become out of tolerance with eachother, and the motor is ruined. Not all 7-bolts are prone to crankwalk, but there have been many cases. 2Gs also have a much weaker turbo (T-25) and higher compression(8.5:1).

The 1Gs have many inferior parts, such as the Mass Air Flow sensor(MAF), and the Exhaust Manifold(as said above). Also they are OBD1. However, earlier 1G models have a 6-bolt cranshaft, which to my knowledge does not get crankwalk. The 1Gs have a wonderful turbo (14b), for stock trim, and have a lower compression ratio of 7.8:1

Then there are the 1990's. LOL. I dont have much experience with them, but from what ive heard EVERYTHING is weaker, especially the drivetrain.

Alot of the 2g parts are interchangeable, such as a 2g manifold and MAF on a 1g, or even a 1g motor in a 2g car.

Your decision rests on what you plan to do with the car as far as power and cosmetics. The 2Gb, 1997-1999, IS the best looking! :p

Let me know if i missed ANYTHING.

5-speed

the torque converter on an AT will rob some HP (not that much though)

The MT will save you gas as well. Plus it's just more fun to drive a 5-speed.

However, if you're running high boost you might consider that an AT doesn't let off the throttle between shifts so you don't have to re-spool the turbo every gear.

there's a big thread on this here somewhere, I think in the FAQ

If you can find one for a good price go AWD either way. Best to start with the best platform. :)
EDIT: I just realized he said TSi AWD at the top.

The site classifieds? Otherwise keep lookin on autotrader and watch for any around your area.

If your going 350 horse for a daily driver,
you can really go either way.
1g's are cheaper, but ofter have plenty of bugs to be worked out. Took me a summer to get mine all good.
on the plus side they are easier to find at scrapers for spare parts.

I think it all comes down to if you have the money to get the looks aswell as the speed.
A 2g for me was out of the question.
I got a budget 1g for 600 bucks.

yeah i found a 2g today the paint is so perfect the only things it needs is the 3rd&4th gears are gone and the motor is knocking he said he has gone through 2 stock turbos and now it has a big 16g on it. he said he will take $1000.00 for it but he said he its always messing up on him.

I would get a 1g. They look great and you can get parts anywhere. I love my 91 TSI and I got it in PERFECT condition for only 1000. Kid before me got 3 tickets in one week. If your looking for a pretty car that you can get lots of body parts, get a 2g.

Also take into consideration the mileage on the cars. A 1G SHOULD have many more miles on it then a 2G would. So this means that there has been more wear and tear on the engine, the suspension, and the drive train. So this means that you could possibly end up having to pay a lot more then you thought for parts to get it in good running order.

ALSO take into consideration what kinds of mods that are on the car. Mods add more stress to the engine. And not everyone is a DSM genius when it comes to modding.

Other then that, just make sure you know what to look for when you inspect/test drive the car and you should be pretty set.

I sold my 5.0 for a DSM. I had a Red with black interior 92' GT 5-speed. I loved that car.. kinda regret selling it now since I've had problems with the DSM.

IMO, keep your 5.0 and buy a cheap 1g. If you're anything like me, you'll regret ever selling the 5.0. The value only keeps going up as well.

yeah i wanna keep 5.0 my gf just pulled up in a 91 tsi awd it is so clean it has 67xxx miles i really want one now i have never driven one before. anyone know where i can find a 1g?

To me, Talons are the best looking 1G's. So here is a REALLY nice one i found in the Classifieds. (of which you should take a really long and hard look at)

EDIT: Just saw that it was posted TODAY!!!! Jump on it now!!! LOL

See if there are any local car forums or anything. Theres on here called KCSR. It's huge with thousands of members. I've actually boughten 3 cars off there and I'm only 17. I got my Prelude, 5.0 and Talon all off there.

If you keep the 5.0 and have a DSM.. you could just build the DSM, then when it's done, drive the DSM daily and HCI the 5.0! :)
