I'm prepping for my next round of upgrades and need some clarity on external wastegate mounting options..
I was going to go with the slowboy manifold, but due to a recent warranty experience with them..thats a no go...I'm going to go with the FP manifold..havent decided on the turbo yet, I'm thinking of the FP 3150, 3053, or 3065...probably going with a Tial 44 wastegate.

Now I see that the mounting options are the O2 housing, and on the turbo itself..are there only certain turbos that allow for direct WG mounting?..and are there any more options that I'm overlooking..from all the posts I've read..there seems to be no clear line for WG mounting.

I want the route that requires the least amount of mods...and just for reference, here's my list of intended mods.

2.3 Stroker kit
Extreme turbo intercooler
proper fuel upgrades (FIC,walbro)
Magnus manifold
Forge BOV (recirc)
Evo gear tranny and rebuilt head (jacks tranny's)
DSM Link
ATi Dampener
RPS flywheel and 6 puck clutch kit
all stainless steel lines
Coil on plug setup (maybe)

As long as the turbo doesn't have an internal wastegate, or even if it does I guess and you remove it. You can mount the wastegate on the o2 housing or manifold. If you are going to do it on the manifold I recommend getting a manifold that has the wastegate attached to all 4 cylinders and not just off the number 1 runner. A 38mm off of the o2 housing with a FP3065 is what I used to run and had zero boosting problems. I would recommend it.

The wastegate on turbos are known as internal, with correct porting the can be very reliable and hold solid boost but are known for boost creep in most stock applications.

External wastegates can be mounted on the O2 housing or the manifold. Running them on the manifold is relieving the exhaust gases before the turbo and you have to get your internal wastegate flapper wired or welded shut to do this.

Running them on the O2 housing allows you to wire the internal wastegate flapper open to relieve the pressure at the turbo where the internal wastegate would normally be doing its job. Both are respectively good as they provide rock solid boost control and help in turbo spool up, as well as being more reliable.

Along with an external wastegate you can vent it to the atmosphere or back into the exhaust. Internal is vented back into the exhaust(hence the name). Venting to the atmosphere is preference and provides a open downpipe kind of sound in 1st gear but not as loud. Venting it back into the exhaust is also acceptable but welding it back into the downpipe can sometimes be a pain and some people have reported turbulance in the exhaust flow if now rerouted properly. Some people have made custom mufflers for their atmospheric dump tubes to muffle the sound. I personally like the sound of an external dumped to the atm, however it is quite annoying on a small turbo like the 14b as it'll open relatively quick upon 10psi.
For a DD i'd reccomend internal, or external dumped back into the exhaust. but from the judgement on the furture mods you have in store id go external dumped to the atm.

When I first bought the car the manifold and turbo housing were cracked so I a bought new factory manny and an Evo big 16g (internal WG) :sosad: I only had the car a week and had not started my upgrade research yet, so I dont intend to waste any money this go round because my next car will be a Supra or kit car..in addition to the Talon :D ....I'm definitely using the FP manny..is it a bolt on affair to vent back into the exhaust Vs. venting to the atmosphere. The FP manny doesnt hav a WG option so I'm going to have to run it off the O2 housing right.

I know theres realy no reason to do it, but could I remove the internal gate off my 16G and go to an external gate..just curious is all.

My bad I see 95 black answered that already

1. Not all turbo's come with internal wastegate's
2. If you are going to run external on an internally gated turbo you need to remove the internal flapper so it doesn't hinder air coming out.
3. Internal wastegate does not refer to where it is vented, it refers to wether or not the wastegate is internally mounted in the turbo or externally on the manifold or o2 housing.
4. If he is going with a FP of sorts you are going to want external. With that amount of airflow you will want to go with an externally mounted off the o2 housing since you have decided on a manifold already. Wether or not you went to atmosphere is up too you. DD you aren't going to open the wastegate unless you really get on it so I would recommend going with external dump.

Here are your external and internal options. Both have been reviewed and are direct bolt on and are great quality.

I agree with you 95 but I was reffering to a manifold mounted wastegate. Sorry for not being more clear.

If you're going to upgrade to an FP30 turbo just run your 16g the way it is because they have custom wastegate setups which won't work with you 16g.
You don't have a choice of wastegate placement with FP 30 Series turbos. You mount the wastegate right off of the turbine housing. Take another look at the pics of their turbos on their website. (The FP 3052 has a nice pic of what the setup will look like on your car.) That's suppose to be one of the main benefits of these turbos. The only option you have with them, is if you're going to recirculate or vent to atmosphere. Either one you choose I wouldn't worry because FP designed both for these turbos, along with the FP manifold you bought.
I have a 16g now and was planning on getting a tubular manifold, and a new 02 housing but decided to hold off since I plan on upgrading to an fp30 turbo in the near future. Good luck!
