Stuck in 3rd gear HELP!

2am, im bringing my friend gas because his car ran out of gas.. We are in the middle of nowhere 5 miles out from anything. I see his car about 30 yards from me and i shift from 2nd to 3rd, not a hard shift or anything just a regular shift. No odd noises no grinding snapping or any metal-on-metal sounds. I let out the clutch and it just revs up like its in neutral, but the shifter is stuck in 3rd and will NOT move. any clues?

i searched the forums and all i got was the linkage to be the problem, but my linkage is fine.

This problem basically JUST happened to me in a way. However I actually powershifted to third. The car will NOT roll, even when I have it in neutral. Car will not move, what so ever, unless the clutch is pressed in.

I'm guessing my fork gave, or the rail. I'm swapping trannies tonight.

93 and up have a very weak 3/4 synchro slider:

Either that broke, or your rail end broke:

In the 90-92s if you have an issue with 3rd, you probably broke the shift fork:

sounds like synchro. sorry about your luck. my entire transmission just piled up on me if that makes you feel any better...
