WTF? Could this be crankwalk? 97 Talon TSi AWD

3 days ago I put a new crank pulley and 3 goodyear gatorback belts on....Today it threw the A/C belt and started making this grinding noise..I had a friend start the car for me while I watched the belts and to my horror..the damn crank slid out and touched the damn fender frame..the proceded to slide itself back in place..once it slid itself back in place..it ran fine no bearing grinding at all..the car has 132,000 miles on it...is this the dreaded crankwalk..or did I not do something right when I replaced the crank pulley? I need answers ASAP Please!!!

The crank slid out? You realize for that to happen, you would have to lose all of the main caps/rods/intermediate journals, everything?

Thanks guys..unfortunately I wont be able to check until Monday..I have to DJ a wedding reception all day tomorrow, but I'm sure yall can understand how watching the whole pulley move could freak me out...i was so frustrated I just went to bed. Have plans for the car..none of which included a new motor...I'll let you guys know soon as I check on Monday.

If your tightening the pulley make sure you jam a screw driver or something into it to prevent the pulley from spinning at the tighten the bolt.

The crank pulley on the 4g63 engine is slip fit, secured by four screws. The 420a has an interference fit pulley, secured by one screw.

The OP has a 4g63 motor.

I bet it just separated.

Crankwalk is measured in .001 -- what you are describing is not crankwalk, its a separated crank pulley. 3 years is longer than I expect them to last.

Pull off accessory belts, remove four bolts holding on pulley, install new pulley, reinstall belts -- next question please!

PS dont buy a used one, that just shortens the time until you get to replace it again

The crank pulley was brand new..I bought it from slowboy back in march I just got around to installing it, sat in a box sealed in the original plastic in my basement till i got around to doin it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the 4g63 also has one large bolt in the middle of the crank that holds on the crank timing gear and the pulley bolts to that gear with 4 12mm bolts. If there is no middle bolt, the crank pulley can easily slip out causing it to appear as though the crank is coming out of the block when actually, it is the crank timing gear and the pulley. I would be worried that the car could jump time since the timing gear is separating from the crank.

wicketdreams: You didn't remove the large pain in the butt bolt in the center when you changed the crank pulley, did you? If you did, you didn't need to, but make sure it is in place.

I just changed my crank pulley last week. New direct from Mitsubishi they are $105.00
mitsu part number is # MD377604. When I took mine off I just dropped under the car. I picked it up later and it was in 2 pieces. The center and the outer ring. The rubber was shot.

It was just starting to mark my timing cover so I guess I caught it just in time.

Update...The outer ring of the pulley completely seperated from the inner ring...Took pics..and emailed them to slowboy...

I talked to Chris at Slowboy and he said that today is 1 day after I bought it...I bought it December (bought somethin else in March) and slowboy wont do anything about it. so I am just stuck now I have to order another crank pulley.

I wont say anything bad about Slowboy..Business is Business..but in the pics you can clearly see the pulley is unweathered and new...and 1 day after a 6 month purchase should be somewhat negligable on something like this.

I am going to order a new pulley from somewhere else though..thanks guys for all your input..if anyone wants to see pics of the pulley...someone tell me how to post them and I'll put them up.

Most after market pulleys are not even close to the quality of a true Mistubishi harmonic balancer / crank pulley. Do yourself a favor and buy a genuine mitsu Pulley, part number is # MD377604

Slow 95 - I had my wifes VW their for warranty repair, they told me the tranny went took them two months to fix. Got the car back and it still ran like crap and left her sit on a few occassions, ended up selling it a month after we got it back. From that point I have heard some stories about them....Oh well though.
