I need to replace both my rear calipers and rotors, can any suggest a good brand for either? I was quoted $651 to replace both with labor and I'm not sure if that was for OEM parts. I would like to spend less than $600 I'll be replacing them myself.

What I would go is: Go to autozone, buy the GSX calipers, the LOADED pair, and two new rotors. You will have a full big break upgrade for less than $200. That is what I did and I would recommend doing the same. Stopping power is much better and it is all direct bolt on. It would be the same as replacing with OEM Gs/Rs brakes, but be much better. Make sure you specify that it is for a 95-99 GSX; just tell them it's a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX AWD turbo.

You could go to a local parts store spend about 150 on the calipers and 150 on rotors and then spend like 50 on break pads. Or spend a little less and get loaded calipers but have crappy break pads.

or spend a little more and change them all and buy the calipers at a local parts store.

Stop on a dime with 9 cents change :)

I like that kit. If I replace the front rotors and pads too I can still keep the front calipers correct? Can you recommend a place I can go to buy new rear calipers?

Why are you buying new calipers anyways? You don't have to change calipers when you do the brakes on a car. Oh and I realised you have a 92. Sorry don't worry about what I said for the GSX brakes

Because my rotors are rusted and about as skinny as a pencil. My calipers are rusted and are permanently locked. Hence, I can't brake in the rear.

Quick check on o'reillys.com:

Rear left Caliper with pad (LOADED) $106.99 (I would imagine their is a core charge too but it doesnt say)

Right Rear same thing $106.99

Now rotors:

Thermoquiet brake rotors: $59.99 each

Total: $333.96 (Keep in mind, their might be a core charge on the calipers but once you take your old ones back in they would refund you your money)

Also Thermoquiet's are what we use at my Sears AutoCenter.
The calipers are Cardone Industries (couldn't find a listing for thermoquiet)
Also I have replaced all four of my fiancee's calipers with Oreilly's thermoquiet calipers. Its a 1998 GSX, and she hasn't had an issue yet. Any question's just ask.

EDIT: just noticed that both calipers have a $40 core charge but like i said once your done and take your old calipers in they will refund that back.

I have two rear calipers from my 1992 GSX that I could sell you. Send me a pm if interested. I just remembered that I still had these so I'm happy to help save u some money.

Oh and brakebest rotors from oreilly cost 20 each. They are just as good. Only difference is the length in warranty

Just to inform you. Brakebest rotors are actually old rotors that have been melted down and reused. "Remanufactured" if you will. Wagner is all brand new "virgin" material.

Sorry I thought it was kinda funny. Since tonight I called the guys down at O'reillys. We all know eachother on a first name basis and bullshit since I have to call them all the time at my job. (Sears Auto Center Technician) I was getting prices on brakes for a girls car that wants me to do her front brakes. I was gonna go with the Brakebest and he told me that small bit of info, also happened to mention he tried them on his car and they did exactly what the length of the warranty is. 1 Year. Sounds like they are crap, CHEAP, but crap. As we all know and have heard. "Do it once, Do it RIGHT!!" Buy the Wagner's and get it done right. Wagner is all we use for brakes at my place of work.

By the way KazooGS-T, how ironic is that? It kind of seems like one of those "small world" type of things.

That is very good to know. I have the same connection with the guys from my Oreilly, I work at an auto place too. They have just told me bring them in before the warranty and change them out. I dunno. I'm not too worried about it because I'm going to be changing rotors in the near future, these are just to "hold due." But, thank you for that bit of info., I had no clue.

You stated that your rear calipers are locked?
Are those the bolt assembly type?

You may be able to disassemble the calipers, remove the rust, and just re-grease the guide bolts that attach the two ends.

I know that's the procedure on my '94 GSX, but I'm not familiar with the rear set on the '92

If it's the piston/pistons, though, don't bother with it. There are too many little parts that are too easy to lose.

EDIT: Oh, hey, so no parking brake?!

We also use the thermoquiets at work. Their ok I guess. Theres not alot of choices for rear pads out there for the 1g's. I have raybestos on the back of my gvr4 and they work good. For rotors We use raybestos at work. May I suggest to please machine the new rotors as well, as they are usually not true, even when they say"ready to install, no machining needed". I've found that to be BS half the time, no matter what brand rotor. I wouldn't even bother taking the caliper apart, just buy some new/rebuilt ones and call it a day. Don't use the pads that come on the preloaded calipers as they are usually garbage. Also don't forget to align the nipples on the rear pads to the little slot on the piston. Not doing so can cause malfunction or very premature wear. I've taken brake pads off that looked like doorstops because people didn't align them right. good luck with it.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I ended up going with Cardone Rear Calipers and was offered a great deal by TSG59_Steve, 4 rotors, 4 sets of brake pads for $255 shipped. So I saved about $200 dollars. I'm happy.

If his manufacturing date is before June of '92 he has single-piston front calipers/6 bolt motor, after that date has dual-piston calipers/7 bolt motor as does the '93 and '94 models.
