Ok, I just put together my new engine. When I put the timing belt on, i lined up the marks on the cam gears with the top of the head so there like this - - - -with the pin things pointing up. Then I lined up the crankshaft arrow thing with the engine arrow and same with the oil pump. tightened everything up. Now when I went to hand crank it with a 1/2in wratchet(sp) it would go about half way then there would be some resistance. So, i kept tuning it and it gets some resistance then loosens up again. I only used one hand to turn it so Its not like a used a breaker bar and put alot of pressure on it. My question is... Is it possible that I bnt some valves by hand? Is there some way to check that, (the engine is not in the car) if not, what else could it be. (its a new block, never been run).

The resistance you are feeling could possibly be the compression cycle. I personally dont believe its possible that you bent the valves with doing what you described.

Ok, the plugs were not in and there is still resistance. However there was resistance before I put the cylinder head on. The block isnt broken in yet so I maybe its just a little tight and will loosen up when it breaks in.

There is a bit of "resistance" every time all the rods change direction of travel. Meaning every time 1 & 3 are at TDC w/ 2 & 4 at BDC, and vice versa. There is a point in there were two rods change from up stroke to down and the other two change from down stroke to up. I'm sure that is what you were feeling with the head off. If you had contacted valves, you would know it. While I'm not going to say it's impossible to bend valves by hand, I'm sure it would take a lot of effort to do it.

If you'd feel better, rotate it until all the marks line back up (like 8 times or something) and snap a picture to post up here. As long as everything looks good, no worries.

Edit:

Here is a high resolution picture of what it should look like. The degree wheel covers the crank timing mark, but it sounds like you already know how it lines up. When it's in time, the intake dowel will point straight up and the exhaust cam will be slightly clockwise from straight up.

Like the other guys said, its fine. I had the exact same thing happen to me as well when I put my head on. Thought I broke it too, but I highly doubt you did.

And your rod bearings are right and tightened to spec.. i knew this guy who tightened the crap outta everything.. and it was " tight" LOL

But what you are feeling is the natural resistance when the rods change direction. its tight every 180 degrees.

Exactly. Alright, thanks for all the info everyone. I thought I bent a valve and almost crapped myself. The engine is going in soon and my GSX project will FINALLY be done... If it starts.
