1st off i searched the forums & couldnt find what i needed.

ok so here is the problem i am having.

i had the car for about 6 months now. only aftermarket mod on the car is an intake. when i bought it it was running perfect. 3 months down the road i get to my school parking lot and it shuts off. i popped the hood and see smoke coming from the timing belt cover, i take the upper timing belt cover off and the belt is snapped in two.

long story short, previous owner didnt do the 60k tune up. water pump pulley snapped.

i take the head off, get it fixed, & reassemble. the timing was done by one of my dads friends.

i get it back & and it idles like crap, idles up & down up & down. i take a look at the timing myself & see that the cams line up perfect but the crank of 1/2 tooth off.

sooo i take it all apart and redo it myself. the timing is now all perfect. i go to start the car and it now idles at an average of 300-400 rpm and does it roughly. but when above 700rpm it idles smooth. it drives smooth through 700 & above rpms. cruises nice also.

i took the IAC out & cleaned it put it back in still no help. new plugs still no help.

what can this be ?

i really need help as soon as possible. i just sold the car and want it running good before i get rid of it.

If this is on the 420A, you might need to adjust the TB cable. Make sure the TB plate closes all the way and that you don't have any vacuum leaks anywhere. You could also check you TPS.

The IAC controls the idle by by-passing air around the TB plate. A gap around the TB plate, or an unadjusted cable will not cause the idle to be too low, rather more likely it would be too high.

Does the vehicle have a CEL?

May want to check for vacuum leaks at the IM gasket, and injector bosses. Check the compression as well to be sure the new head gasket is sealing properly, and double/triple check the timing again.

so could it be possible its the plug wires ?

the throttle cable is adjusted perfect, what i did was adjust it so the idle would raise, but that really didnt help either. so its back to the way it should be. the IM gasket is brand new & so is the head gasket, it was running good before i did the timing, but ill go and recheck my work. also will check for vacuum leaks.

Bad plug wires may cause a rough idle, but should not cause your idle to surge. Most commonly, idle surge issues are related to the IAC. You say you cleaned it, you should test it as well.

Does you car backfire, or exhaust sound bubbly, during decel?
