1st gear pops out and grinds

95 eagle talon awd turbo, 135k miles manual trans.

First gear will pop out and when trying to put it back in will grind. The only way to get it in properly is when coming to a stop right before the car stops gently slide it into first gear, then when accelerating from the stop it will not pop out.

My question is this, do i need to get a rebuild or new trans? Is it a simple problem with the shifter fork, and if so how can i check this? also this is my second car so if rebuilding is not extremely difficult i do not mind doing it myself, just need to know where to get the parts.

thanks

it pops out and grinds when i try to put it back in unless i put it into first rolling real slow to a stop. If i reverse then go to first like normal, when i try to move in first it will pop out and grind.

Sounds like 1st gear syncro needs some freshing up. When it starts to pop out of gear unless you hold it, its pretty much on its way out.

it is past that, i can no longer hold it in. Where can i buy a first gear synchro or is it even worth it? is it hard to install?

You can buy a first gear syncro from your local mitsubishi dealer. And yes it is very time consuming and somewhat hard to install especially if youve never worked on a transmission before. First you have to get the transmission out obviously, then you have to take the whole transmission apart. This can be a daunting task especially if youve never done this before. With so many parts in the transmission that look a like it can be hard to identify specific parts, and even more disturbing is the possibility of "mystery parts" when you go to put it back together. Plus you will need special tools to remove the syncro and set backlash etc. I would suggest getting a used tranny or having a shop rebuild yours.

ive rebuilt a few of my own trannies for my 92 and trust me....get the tranny out before its more then just the synchros or bearings..you may need a new 1-2 fork by now or new first gear...but even thats cheap compared to what it could be lol...seriously take the tranny out and pay the money to get the problem fixed before it escalates.

Here is some more info through my website:

The problem you are having is pretty common on old 1G units. We replace ALL of the synchro parts on all of our rebuilds so you won't have that problem again.

I can double synchro your 1st gear so you can shift it in there while rolling with ease. I had one guy shift it into 1st on the hwy and it blew up his street disk, lol
