I am a newbie on dsm. I have owned a 95 eclipse gs and want to build a 2g gsx or tsi awd. I was wanting to know, what is the best engine for either one? I keep hearing something about 6 bolt and 7 bolt, and have no clue what that is. With my 95 gs, the car came with the P.O.S. 420a motor which since I am getting a Gsx or Awd, I will be with the 4g63 i think. Can someone please help me out! I want to build my dream car.

Sincerely,
Jonathan Brady

You want the 4g63 6-bolt the 7-bolts are less powerful and sometimes do this thing called crankwalk which will destroy your motor. So if your lookin for a GSX or TSi get one with the 6-bolt motor. Those are 89-931/2 also known as 1g or 1st generation. A lot of people swap the 7-bolt motors for 6-bolt motors in later cars aswell, those (if done right) are good aswell. good luck!

RT-AWD don't give bad advice...

7 bolts are NOT less powerful but they do have weaker stock rods (400whp capable vs. 500whp for the 6 bolt). 7 bolts do crankwalk so stay away from them.

6 bolts came from 90-92.5

Lastly, SEARCH. This forum has been around since 2000 or so and all these questions have been asked a million times. If you search, you find all the info you want RIGHTAWAY and you don't have to wait.

Ok, you almost got it man. 1g 6bolts were 90-92 (mid april 92 actually). Late 92-94 had a 7bolt that actually has less crankwalk than a 2g 7bolt.

Crankwalk isn't THAT common. People have had really good luck with 7bolts. But if you are going to push a lot of power, and want to do it reliably for a long time, you might want to consider 6bolt (if you don't get a 6bolt stock).

And how are 7bolt less powerful? ALL 1g's made the same power #'s, and technically 2g 7bolts made 210bhp over the 1g 6bolt 195.

To the OP, get which ever body you like better in a 90-92 if you don't want to mess with swapping, or some people get them just for less chance of CW. But i don't think i've ever heard of a 1g 7bolt walking.

These guys are both partially right. Currently the popular thing is to swap out your 7-Bolt motor and go with a 6-Bolt. The absolute best motor that exists is the 7-Bolt motor after the 1997 model year. The 7-bolt motor is the same engine (despite internals) that is still being used in the evo up until the 10. All motors CAN crankwalk just the early versions of the 7-bolt are the most apt to. If you buy a DSM and it comes with a good motor. I would not worry about doing a motor swap until it breaks. Chances are if it hasn't had any issues yet then you probably won't have them. Just buy all of your aftermarket bolt on items for the motor you have and if something happens then it will still all transfer over to the new motor regardless.

I recently went through all this stuff last year when i spun a balance shaft bearing on my 98 gsx.

Here's what i was told during my research:

First, the '98 and '99 motors were built different, specifically the thrush bearings on the crank were re-designed to help eliminate crank walk.

Second, nobody really knows what causes it. A lot of the speed shops I talked to said the early ACT 2100 and 2600 clutches were to aggressive.

Third, flywheel set up is an issue.

Fourth, owner driving habits. Doing a boat load of 6,000rpm launches probably doesn't help.

I decided to rebuild my 7 bolt motor and it seems to be holding up, except for the recent tranny problem - 2nd gear synchros and shaft bearings. But that's a different issue.

I've also decided to dump the firdanza lighted flywheel and go back to a new stock one.

you can put a 6 bolt in the 2g body. there are some modifications that have to be done but i can't recall.

roadraceengineering.com has the list of parts and mods required.

Sorry bout that error I made. When i said 7-bolts were weaker i was talking about stock. I'm only trying to help. I'm pretty new to this stuff too. if your looking online for a car might i suggest Craigslist.org its a very easy sight to use this is where i found my car.
