Won't go over 4000 RPMs..

My friend just got his 92 talon tsi awd. It was bone stock when he got it, nothing even touched under the hood. I check the turbo for shaft play, it was perfect, and then I put everything back. For some reason, now the won't go over 4k. The only thing I didn't put back in was the air box cover. Is this needed? Should I have left it? I left the MAF/MAS in place, all I did was take the can off around the filter... Any ideas what it could be?

a huge boost leak. Did you clamp down all the intercooler piping?

My buddies is doing the same thing, his was a blown intercooler pipe.

Alright, that's what I figured. The hoses have literally NEVER been touched in 15 years, so I bet when I took one off, it cracked or split. Ill boost leak test this week.


EDIT: yes all the piping was tightly re clamped.

ya im sure thats what happened, they get a nice seal around them if they have never been touched and then they start to dry rot. That sounds like a nice car that your buddy got though an unmolested 92.

one thing that i would check also is to see if the intake tube slide on all the way and is tightened up. I know sounds stupid but we all have those dumb dumb moments.

Haha, yeah I made sure I tightened it down completely to his PERFECT stock 14b. No shaft play whatsoever, and it has probably never seen more than 12 psi. Amazing. This car is absolutely stock, the only "mod" is pedal covers.

have you had a chance to take a look at it again and do a boost leak test? Im actually kind of curious to see whats going on with it.
