Hello to all,
I'm not in the business of tryin to repost things that have been posted a million times, and as you can see for as long as I've been a member (not too, too, long....) compared to how many threads I've started, I strive on making useful, or insightful posts, that help or contribute to the good of the group.
Well, I'm not too sure how much this would help others, but I've got my hopes up. I am in the market for a good race motor, and I'm in the process of conducting my research. I am intrersted in hearing from some experienced DSM'er as to what shops they would recommend, or what approach I should take in the purchase of a solid 4G63 motor.
Now, everyone has different goals they wish to achieve, for different circumstances, ect....so it would be nice to hear where-for-what....so to speak....stright line motor power, road course ect...
Now me personally, I'm looking for a good strong motor, with good track/drag performance, as well as street drivability. I'm looking at a 6 Bolt swap in a 2G. Now, mostly, I've been looking at SBR's engine packages.....anyone with experience with these guys, help me out here...good business? I've gotten a few bolts ons from them...but this is some real money now...... I have a goal of 650hp....and as anyone should/would be....I'm on a budget. Would it be better for me to build my own engine, or purchase a fully built.
I am pretty dead set on John Shepard Transmissions....but for engines...I'm still not sure....let me know what I'm missing here. I'm not totally in the dark here....
Let's see what kind of insight we can get.....some good information, and lets get this thread going.

Thanks to all for the help! :thumb:

My are less than the guy you want to go with and include some parts that are a little better for less money. We really like the EVO III 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. I have a lot of info about those gears and the ratios on my site. An EVO III geared trans from us with our 4-spider or welded diff will do perfectly fine at your 650hp goal. Check it out :)

I have heard excellent things about Jack's transmissions, although I do not have any personal experience with him. As for SBR, they kind of got a bad name for themselves a while back with a few problems, but since then they have a new guy taking care of most of the stuff named Chris and things to be a MILLION times better than they were. I personally chose to buy all the parts for my motor and have it put together at a local machine shop.

I have heard very good things about these trannys. I will probably be looking into one myself in the next month

As for the motor, I have no experience with SBR. When I went into my engine, I tore it down to just a block and a crank and then had the short block professionaly rebuilt for $250. Then put it all back together. Great price.

Yep, that's me! I just signed up here not too long ago, but I can't post in the drivetrain section, (because I'm new I guess) so I'm stuck here right now. Hoping to get to know some new people here and help as many out with their tranny issues as I can. I like to help those than do or do not run our trans, so if you run a Shep unit, no hard feelings :) Good luck with the Shep unit! They still seem to work well for most people! :)

Hey, you're not too far away! Just drive your trans down and we can tear it apart here and show you all of the things wrong, or hopefully, not wrong with it, LOL! We normally take time with the locals here and tear the unit down with them. If you set up a time with us, you can learn a lot if interested. We keep a pretty good open-door policy here :)

Oops, sorry to go off topic there...

Thanks!! :D But in all honesty, I can't even come close to taking all of the credit. There are a lot of people here that work harder daily, to try and fix problems (because they happen no matter where you go) and make things right!

With that said, to answer the OP's question, here is my take on it. A 4g63 motor is not all that complicated, but I have seen dozens of "local" machine shops fudge them up. When I think budget build, paying for a motor twice, doesn't really fit. Why not have a shop have a shop that has more experiance with these cars build it for you? I'm not allowed to advertise here, so I wont, but I would suggest having a DSM Oriented shop build your motor. It may be a few more dollars, but in the end, it will be worth it to know what your getting!

Thanks again,

Hey, thanks to all for the information! :thumb:

I agree with you about trusting a well known shop that specializes in DSM's. I will continue my research and hopfully come to my conclusion soon.

I'm sure I will fine somone trustworthy to build me an engine.

If you want a stout engine my first recomendation is Darren over at www.ffwdconnection.com. I've seen the work they do, and I KNOW how helpful, and knowlegable those guy's are. I won't have anyone else to my engine, h has helped me out with everything, and now Im just waiting for the cash fund's to come in to buy a custom motor built just for me soon as Im out of college in a few months time.
