so i can't decide what fuel pump i want to use on my 91 gsx. i'm going between the 190 and the 255. i know that with the 255 i'll need an aftermarket fpr but i've never installed one of those and vfaqs wasn't very helpful. so i would like your opinions on what i should do or give me your experiences with mounting an aftermarket fpr.
 
If you are going to upgrade in the future (you might say no, but odds are you will) just go with the 255. A few vendors sell complete kits for the fpr which really simplify the installation process. If you can do the fuel pump, you can do the afpr.
 
what are your goals for it? the 255 flows alot of fuel. I'd say half of the guys that have one don't really need one. But since their the same price... Don't be fooled by thinking you wont need a AFPR with the 190. Alot of people don't encounter problems, but some do. I was one of the ones that did. If I had to do it all over again, I would just get the pump and AFPR and do them both at the same time.my 2psi.

get a 255, youll need it more than the 190 in the future. you dont need an fpr for a 255, i dont have one.
1. pull out the carpet and spare tire stuff in your trunk.
2. loosen the bolts on the panel in your trunk.(i believe its on the left corner) and disconnect the sensor. (cant remeber sensor name but its next to the panel)
3. relieve fuel system pressure.(haynes or chilton manual)
4. youll need FLARE wrenches to disconnect the fuel lines underneath the panel. DONT USE REGULAR WRENCHES BECAUSE YOULL STRIP THE BOLTS!
(correct me if im wrong but i used a 14mm and 3/4 standard FLARE wrenches on the fuel lines)
5. youll need to push the fuel line out the way it gets annoying.
6. loosen the bolts beneath the panel holding the pump bracket in the tank.
7. pull the bracket out of the tank and disconnect any remaing electrical connections.
8. remove the old pump off the bracket and be sure to install a new filter.
9. install is reverse.
 
DSM Kid, do you know what your fuel pressure is? You don't *technically* need an AFPR for a Walbro 255-HP, but your stock FPR will be overrun. Some 2G FPRs can handle it, due to manufacturing flukes and higher stock fuel pressure. I have yet to see a 1G FPR that didn't overrun with a 255 pushing it. You'll run over-pressured, and either go rich, develop fuel leaks, or both. Good luck tuning with an unstable base fuel pressure, you'll really need it. On the up side, you'll get better atomization. I know this as the previous owner of MY car dropped in a 255 and left the stock FPR in place. I was running almost 60psi when tested at the fuel filter. I promptly got my AFPR and installed it. Better gas mileage, more power, less headache. Never pays to take the cheap way out.

As for the original poster, installing an AFPR isn't difficult, so long as you get an install kit. I used the IE-FPR kit and it went smoothly. Unbolt/remove your stock FPR, screw the lines onto the AFPR, press the lines and trim as needed, hook up vacuum and the return line, bolt the adapter onto the end of the fuel rail.
There are a few AFPRs that look almost-stock, that just bolt to the end of the fuel rail where the original FPR sat. Planning to switch to one of those myself, as in CA an AFPR is technically an illegal modification, or so I've been warned a number of times. If it looks stock, it might slip by on inspection. That type is also MUCH easier to install... literally just unbolt the old one, disconnect the return and vac lines, bolt on the new one, attach the old return and vac lines, set pressure and you're good to go.
 
Personally I like the Supra Pumps. They flow more, are quieter, and are way more reliable than the Walbro pumps.
ya, my walboro is loud. its not annoying it actually sounds kind of cool at idle LOL.
oh and talesin i just stated that i didnt run an fpr and i had no known problems.
 
I don't know about all this "you need a AFPR for a 255hp" stuff. I had to put my car back to stock to get it smogged which included the fpr. I have a rewired 255hp in the tank and I never had a problem. My wideband never showed rich at idle one time and I passed CA smog first time with no problems. My fp gauge did'nt show any high pressure at idle either.
 
Well, a cheaper, easier, quieter install is the EVO 8 Fuel pump, with a rewire. Check the different flow rates from this link.

As you can see, the rewired EVO8 pump will flow 201lph at stock fuel pressure. Probably more than enough that you need. It is recommended to get a FPR. Your car will run more reliably and will be easier to tune. They aren't hard to install, this is the one I run.

I would just go with the 190 if you dont plan on going extremely crazy with your upgrades. I always think back to the fact that my cousin was running 12's and only had a 190 pump. You dont always have to go big to make power.
 
I have a 255 walbro pump without an AFPR. I have absolutly no problems whatsoever. I get 30MPG on the highway and like 23 city which is normal. I have no decreased performance or anything like that. The 255 walbro is loud!!! The 190, if you dont want to upgrade much, would be ok for you to get, but its all wasted money if you decide to upgrade in the future. If you dont know how to do it, even with the vfaqs bring it to a shop. I got my fuel pump done for like $275 including the pump. Its better to have someone put it in right than have someone put it in wrong and think its right. (I encounter that a lot because im stupid) If you have a shop do it and want the AFPR then get it done. It cant hurt to get it in. I dont think it will hurt either if you dont have it.
 
This has been discussed about as many times the bov venting to atmosphere bullshit. I think there's enough information out there for everybody to come to their own conclusion's, so why start another useless thread about it?
