I recently purchased a used valve cover off of Ebay. I never noticed this before, but the breather tube(not sure of it's proper name) is not there, only a hole. I didn't notice until I was ready to reconnect the hose that normally leads from there. I'm thinking of maybe cutting off the old one with a dremel and JB welding it in. Anyone have a better idea? Perhaps anything involving a catch can set-up? My cars in the shop until next week, and hasn't been driven with my new cover. Perhaps have my mechanics whip something up? Oh yeah I lifted this pic off the internet, not actually my cover

Good idea. Any other ideas? And why the heck would the hole be there and not the tube? It's a JDM cover,is that why? Plus how could I not notice before I bought it LOL

I would go to a hardware store and get a hose barb (in the plumbing section) and get the corresponding tap. Tap the hole and screw in the hose barb. You could use JB weld on the threads if you wanted.

This will sound dumb, but would it be ok to drive it home without the tube connected to the intake,or would I risk oil and water through my engine bay? Plus a major boost leak correct? I'm still learning the basics

I didn't think that it would be wise to drive with that off but I wanted to be sure. I'll go to the shop Tuesday and talk to the guys working on my car, work something out.

Would def. have oil in the engine bay driving with that off. I would say you over looked at because its a small thing you would assume would just be there, and didn't think much of it. I would follow everyone else on the tapping and threading of that hole........Just make sure you do it off the head not on.

Yeah I def don't want any metal shavings in the head! And small is right,it sat on my floor for about a month before I put it on. I'm kinda glad it's in the shop, don't want to clean out the other side of my engine bay. Already cleaned the other side(valve cover crack) and am in the process of having every belt replaced plus auto tensioner because of it. I've gotta pay more attention to the little things, especially when I'm buying from Ebay

It's a common mod to just vent that to the atmosphere, instead of your intake. It tends to spray oil everywhere, which is why people get it out of their intake system. That is the only ill effect I could see, spraying oil around your engine compartment. It's not a boost leak or vacuum leak of any kind, its a breather. Thats what it does.

Just get it fixed enough to put a filter (or better yet, a catch can:thumb: ), basically get a nipple on it again however anyone ^^^ suggested.

Short term, I don't think it'll do you much harm, unless you live in a sandstorm. And I'm not even sure If it ever sucks IN. I can only observe it at idle, and its always blowing. But the phrase breather hints that it sucks in also.

If you do drive it with it off make sure you plug the port on the intake pipe. That will create a lean condition if left open.

When you drill and tap that hole, it goes above the plate mounted in the valve cover. So make sure you get all of the shavings out. You can put some grease on the drill and tap to keep some of the shavings from going in there.

You dont have to drill and tap it.It doesnt thread in,its pressed in.Just take the one out of your old valve cover. You can do this by taking a pair of plyers or vice grips (dont press too hard or you will crush it) and wiggle it back and forth while pulling it out. Then you can just hammer it in the other valve cover with a rubber mallet. I just had to go through this a couple of weeks ago.

I wondered if it did press in...tried to pull the old one out but I didn't have good pliers or vicegrips that day. I'm gonna buy a pair today. I live about 20 miles from my mechanic,if I did let the tube open for the drive home, how much oil are we talking about? A light mist? A catch can of some type is def in order. Thanks for all the input everyone!
