Winnipeg,
I am in the middle of changing my timing belt right now and I am at the point where I got everything off. I am wondering what I can use to clean oil and belt shavings (b-belt OMG ) out of the timing belt cover? Can I just use a solvent and hose it down with water?

I had a big oil leak from my valve cover and I dont want my new belts and pully's getting coated in oil and shavings (vc leak is fixed). It looks to me like it should be ok but I just want to make sure first.

Thanks Axe

I have used Walmart carb cleaner for a bunch of things like this. There also is brake cleaner.
Be sure to test it on a small spot to make sure it wiil not cause any damage.

It's just plastic, just get some paper towels to dry as much of it as you can, then just throw it in the sink and clean it. No need to go crazy you wont be able to see it once it's back on anyways.

The cam seals where replaced a year ago when I rebuilt the head. I know it was the valve cover, I had 2 stripped bolts and I didn't tighten it enough so I found out when I took it off to fix the threads.

Also the front case is what I am talking about cleaning and its on the car. There is alot of oil and belt shavings in there . My b'belt shredded off all its teeth. I just dont what to use something that might eat at the seals.

Brake clean will be fine. We use it at work all the time. Spray it down real good to clean it then rub a little oil on any seals that you might spray. Brake clean usually evaporates within seconds anyways so it doesn't dry things out that much at all.

+1 for brake clean. If you still dont feel safe using brake clean try some Simple Green degreaser.
