Does the car run well? If it's just the BOV sound but everything runs properly, what's the problem?

There's just one vaccuum line from the BOV to the intake manifold, and that takes 30 seconds to check.

Then you can do a boost leak test to check the BOV. Pressurize the intake with the IM end of the BOV line capped and a vaccuum tester on the BOV line. First, check to see that the BOV holds 20psi (it should). Then use the vaccuum tester to find out when the BOV opens and starts dumping the pressurized air out the recirc hose. You'll have to search or look in a manual to find out what the actuation vaccuum should be. If it's not opening, you should hear very strange noises (compressor surge) coming from under the hood during shifts while driving.

Car runs ok its just i thought these first gen bovs had tons of hype about them being loud and working so well. Well mine you can hardly hear the psh out of it. This is my first turbo so i dont know how well it should be running it spools strong to me but a buddy who has a 2g said that my turbo and maf are not breathing proporly??? I have stock maf and would like to change it but i want everything running strong first.

I'm not as familiar with 1gs, but the 2g intake pipe and upper intercooler pipe that are connected via the BOV recirc hose are rubber and plastic. Most folks eventually upgrade both pipes to metal. That makes the BOV more audible, because metal "rings" while plastic and rubber damp out vibrations (sound). I have a 1g BOV on my 2g, and I have metal pipes. The BOV is audible during shifts, but it's not what I'd call loud.

If you want to find out if your car is running properly, do the normal tune-up stuff rather than listening to your friend's guesses and speculations. Check out the Stage 0 mods section in the upgrade path part of this forum for a list of things you should do.

If you think you'll start wrenching on your DSM and upgrading, you need to do all of those normal maintenance things. It'll get you under the hood which is the first step.

If you have an aftermarket boost gauge and a datalogger, you can find out hard facts about the way your motor is running.
