Ebay oil coolers

This site may earn a commission from merchant affiliate links, including eBay, Amazon, and others.

I've got 2 points that are some what counter of each other.

1) That seems fairly expensive seeing as how you can get some seriously quality oil coolers on ebay for somewhat cheap. Lookup setrab, mocal, fluidyne, modine, or long. (long is the cheapest, but still an effective oil cooler)

2) Don't cheap out on an oil cooler, and preferrably don't buy a used one. Used ones from nascar tend to have shards of metal in them from whatever blew up while they were in line. This is why nascar teams sell them so cheaply. Not saying that they wouldn't work, but it was a very good reason for me not to buy one when a very reliable source, Mitch Ruso, explained this to me. Also, a cheap/crappy oil cooler is a rock hit away from dumping oil out and if you don't catch it in time, destroying your motor.

Couldn't you just flush it with oil a couple times? Just curious.

You could, but how confident can you be that you'll remove everything... Especially with turbos, even a little sliver of metal can do damage.

In the end, it's a coin toss. I bet MOST of the time you' be fine, but is it worth skimping 40$ for that possible chance of destroying your turbo, or motor, or both?

This is a good point about the coolers and buying used but who really knows why they're selling off used parts.
The "used" Setrab that I bought off of Ebay for $60 did not appear to have ever been mounted-it looked new.

I wouldn't buy this kit. a 1990 filter housing has ports for a cooler so you don't have to mess with that sandwich adapter. It also thermostatically controlls flow to the cooler.

Diamond Star Motorsports closed their doors at the end of February. Their site is still up, but you can't order anything from them.

The cooler, lines, and fittings you should be able to get from Summit. The oil filter housing is available from JNZ.

What size lines and fittings did you use, btw, just for anybody who ends up searching this thread?

Beware of which ones you get off of ebay. A buddy ordered one and we couldn't find any fittings for it at any local hardware stores, or the two local race shops. We were then informed that it was metric pipe thread and they weren't even sure where to find misc fittings, so he ended up buying a new kit from one of the shops.

Such a great place going out of busniess? Why them and not SBR?

Exactly, i just bought springs from them and they were telling me that they just moved buildings and were simplifing things.

Metric thread is standard on these coolers. The threads on the 1990 oil filter housing are metric also.
Summit, Jeg's and Baker's all sell metric to AN adapters.
